Figuring out router user and pass

I need to figure out my router's username and password so I can forward one of my ports, but I can't login to the gateway. The default one doesn't work for some reason and neither of my parents know it either. I really don't want to have to reset/reconfigure and all that, but I might if it comes to that. Any help?
Sorry to hijack your thread, but is there any way to make sure your port forwarding works? I'm sure that I opened a port on my router, as I already logged into the router and opened the required port, but the application itself (and other port testers) say that they can't connect via that port.
Most likely if you have a separate router and "modem", it's very possible the "modem" is actually a combination modem AND router.
Most ADSL "modems" are actually set up this way. Cable broadband modems are usually just a modem, but can sometimes be a "gateway" meaning it has a router in it too.

If your "modem" doesn't have wireless and you added a wireless router to give you WiFi capability, it's very likely the port is being blocked by the router in the "modem".

You need to check out the specs on your "modem" to find out if that's what's blocking your ports.

Post the brand name and model number of your modem here, or Google it to check it out.

Start>Run> Type in CMD, press enter, then type IPCONFIG. Should show your default gateway. Time that into this browser, make sure your using internet explorer just incase. If it loads forever and over, just restart your internet/router(Not sure which one), and then try again.

Yup.. ^^
You need to look up the "default username and password" for the BRAND NAME of your router.
There are a few common ones, but each brand has their own variations.

Try various combinations of "admin" for either or both of the fields (username and password) and also try leaving the field blank

And if the password has been changed from the default, you're essentially screwed until someone remembers it or you reset the router to factory defaults.
