Reducing the amount of damage from monsters

How do I reduce the amount of damage I receive from monsters? (E.G, 1500 to 1000-800 upon damaged by a monster). My Beast Tamer seems to be taking more damage than my Mechanic and I need to reduce this as I'm having a bit of difficulty farming melting cheese in MP3. Like, what do I need to upgrade to reduce the amount of damage inflicted by either monster contact or monster attack?

On epic/unique/legendary top/overall, you can get the the potential line "Invincible for 1/2/3 seconds after getting attacked" which should reduce the damage you take considerably if you are getting hit really often.

Defense is either a flat damage reduction (2000 original damage - 500 flat = 1500 damage) or a % damage reduction, which ever is greater. So maybe start getting weapon defense? Also zero's link skill is good for damage reduction.

Farming cheese in mp3, rip.
Just run zakum on all your chars lv 100+ for endless pots.
I don't use pots at all when I grind (familiar>pots)
And for bossing the weekly guild pots are more than enough

Looking at My own 131 beast tamer, you do get passive skills that buff your defense and hp by a modest amount.

The Bear Tree, which is supposedly meant for bossing gives you 50% more hp and 100% more defenses.

The leopard gives you chance to leech hp from enemies at a % chance.

The Hawk gives you mostly mobility.

The cat gives you some extra passive regen, but at the rate you get hit, it won't help.

Your best chance is to try out Bear Mode and maybe get some extra defense as already written above this post.

Well, a long time ago it use to be based off of defense, but it isn't as significant as it use to be.
Of course some classes are more squishy then others as well due to their set of skills/stats.

Your best bet is to just get +mainstat/+hp/+starforce items and tank it out. A lot of main stats provide you with avoid/def/mdef, and of course damage.

Then there is always an option of getting some sort of HP healing familiar, I would recommend Mano if you don't want to spend mesos on mutant snails. I hunted Mano no more then 5 times before I got his familiar. (I have 0% droprate)

Defense and magic defense perhaps? Star forcing gear adds some minor defense but it does stack.

Also it could depend on skills, for some can add defenses or actually reduce % damage taken.

Like for Heros, they get -10% damage taken from first job, and buccs get a -20% damage taken for 3rd job (to counter lower defense than warriors).

Thieves usually get avoid skills instead of defense skills, but some gain leeching skills instead.

Most Mages have Magic guard that hits their MP instead of HP. I know Bishops have -15% damage taken.

It could be one of the animals that have those skills to help with defense, otherwise try to give them higher tier gear and/or starforce it.
