Some sword wielding protagonists with good character developement sound real nice.
Made after 2010 is preferrable, just 'cause I don't like most animation styles from the early 2000s/late 90s

Right now I really like Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei / The Irregular at Magic High School. There are a few sword users, but it's primarily magic based.
Katanagatari is better than sao and akame
Animes similar to SAO season 1 would be Accel World/Log Horizon/Btoom/.hack series/Blood Lad
For Akame Ga Kill it would be D Gray Man/Mirai Nikki/Guilty Crown/Dangan Ronpa
