Lf people who go to anime cons
i'm hoping that theres gotta be some basilers out there who go to cons...
so i got a artist alley table at AX for next year. problem is, this is gonna be my first time as a vendor so i'm in the middle of gathering advice on what to do.
from you guys i'd like to hear stuff like, what kind of merch do you usually/mostly get (prints, charms, etc) and how much you're willing to pay for them
what's popular, what's not, what you think is going to be popular by next year (what's safe to try)
and what the competition's like
honestly i'm also conflicted on what kind of art style to go for, so what you guys tend to look for (strong graphic design? strong artistic technique? a very unique style? all of the above?) would be helpful too.
if theres actually anyone here who has tabled at AX or other cons before any con advice would be awesome too

Hmm... The latest con I went to, while it had a fair share of Marvel/DC stuff, also had anime merchandise like keychains, charms, figures, small bags, prints, etc.; though it was mainly stuff from popular animes like DBZ, Naruto, Bleach, AoT, Fairy Tail, One Piece, and all that.
However, there were multiple booths that had Gundam model kits here and there, which I usually buy. (Some booths had kits for series like Build Fighters Try, SEED, 00, and Wing, and also the latest Real Grade kits)
My sister sells art in the artist alley at AX.
@juni: No problem any time! I mean cosplay accessories or things people can use to casually cosplay characters would help, also look for whats popular I know squidkids is popular (Splatoon)
@juni: I'd totally order clear files from you zzz
At my local anime con, I go crazy over the artist's alley every time. Prints are generally what I prefer. As for the art style, I am sort of simplistic so I either go for the ones that stick very closely to the anime's original art style. There is the rare case where a unique art style can be more endearing though. A tip I have for you is to just do what you're good at, because it pains me to see people halfheartedly take on a style they're unused to.

most anime/manga series creators allow people to make fanart to sell - we have to make sure of their stances on the issue beforehand. also, creating merch plagiarized from official merch is not allowed.

@pokemon744 thank you!
@hanainuzuka bikinis lmao! thats interesting. acrylic cut pins and small prop replicas sound vry nice, thanks for the ideas
I go to Otakon every couple years... I usually begin with a planned merch budget, then walk out with 4x that spent by the end >->
The usuals for me: Lots of plushies, lots of buttons, a few keychains and charms, some prints, some stickers, a hat or two, and I'm usually on the lookout for a new laptop or messenger bag (if I need one, and if one is available). Sometimes there are cute little handmade figures/statues, and I buy a few that catch my eye to put on a shelf in my dorm.
The rest of my money goes to graphic novels and other comics on sale in the Dealer's Room. Between Otakon and ComicCon my bedroom back at home has turned into a small library...
Hm that sounds fun
Maybe I should go sometime
I admit I go to cons at least once to twice a year! For me I know the Colossalcon artist ally is the only artist ally I have spent money in. I bought:
Anime themed bikini's
Acrylic cut pins
and rarely buttons
but for me I love seeing anime themed jewlery and clothing that isnt made of metal because I have sensitive skin so that tarnishes and leaves me with a rash lol. a small one but a rash none the less. but I also love small prop replicas that are well made, I saw one girl made resin casts of madoka soul gems, I would have bought them if the original mold wasnt a little wonky... but it really depends on the con on what will sell.
Plushies, cute stuff. Key chains. Basically anything as long as it's cute and adorable.
And Dolls. I love dollies.
I just did a quick stalk, and I love your artwork
Generally, people want small items that can conveniently be carried around, get some keychains. I love those, also well known items from franchises, such as the vongola rings from Reborn! Those sold really well at the last con I went to. Good Luck.
I go to AN every year or so, bookmarks, pins, and hats are what I usually buy. Items under $4 are what I see clearing pretty fast, anything over if it's not oversized/amazing quality typically go home with the seller. (People LOVE pins, if you can rent a machine you can start commissions with those)
@dorks ty! yeah so far i plan on doing prints, acrylic keychains/charms, stickers, and maybe buttons. id like to do stuff like clear files and shirts in the future but i need more funds
thanks for the input so far guys
your styles rly cute you could totally do charms/stickers
I'm a plushie and figure buyer personally. Sometimes I will buy prints if they really stand out or just insanely cute. Some artists i see usually go for stuff that is generally popular withing the last few years or has a very large fanbase for.
prints sell well
do not do commissions
art styles that stand out strongly tend to do well
