Can someone explain what these directions mean?

I'm finishing my summer reading project and the directions say to quote to support our description of the characters. Can someone please help?

It says, "Make sure to cite them correctly (Author 35) for the first quote and (35) for each subsequent quote," but I don't really get if I'm supposed to put the page number in replacement for the number 35.

Don't know if this is relevant but this is for 11th grade English.
