theory of starting a study group? Lgt feedback b4 i attempt

so i attend a college with a somewhat large population of sutdents. lecture halls are filled to about 200 students.

some quick back ground and my intents
-i have not interacted with any people in my classes.
-my grades arent perfect and i would like to acheive more in class.

here's my idea of self starting a study group today:

1) Search for up to a person during lecture who is sitting by themselves diligently taking notes in lecture (the person should probably be a male cause the action a male asking a female might be implying romantic interest instead) .

2) Learning his name beforehand, go up to him and say, ' oh you aren't Dan Hoffmeier , aren't you in that study group?' if he says yes, ask to join his, if no ask him he would like to join your's (I'm pretending as if I had a study group).

3) Let him know we are meeting in a few days, get his cell number, facebook, and email.

4) Then do the same for several other people within a span of days and then let they all coagulate in one place on that assigned day, and then bam there's the study group.

Would this work? 'never know until you try' is the quote im thinking of, but im scared of this attempt to miserably going wrong and people arriving with some not then making look like a liar for pretending a had a study group.

any experts wanna shed some light on this? thanks so much basil <3
