How does Grosso Polpos drop rate work?

So a guildie told me that using my Spider Familiar or my daily 2x drop does NOTHING. His reasoning was that my 2x drop buffs would only work on monsters I directly kill. He said (and no idea where he got this info from) a phantom mob drops everything after you kill Polpo. So, since I do not kill this phantom mob it doesn't affect the drop chance and I'm better off using a familiar that will help keep me alive.

Can anyone give evidence to support this? Or support against it?

@iEatNoobz: You sure? It kinda looks like someone already did that.

It is a phantom mob. You can actually attack this mob, but no damage text will appear. It's located slightly to the lower left of Grosso Polpo.

It's easy to see if you have projectile attacks like Hurricane or Snipe or whatnot; if you stand on the left side of the map and shoot towards the middle you'll see the projectile disappear and you'll hear it connect, but no damage will come up. It's that phantom mob that drops the gear when Grosso Polpo/Livyatan die.

Hope this helped.

I have no idea what this "phantom mob" is about, but sometimes when I attack him my Chain Lighting goes off under the ship somewhere.
I figured it was just some visual glitch but now idk

leviathan drops are always in the center of the ship.

Well... if Leviathan (Wrong spelling, I know) drops something, it would be in the water that you can't get to
