Why are threads deleted?

Why are controversial threads being deleted? I can see them in the section but when I click on them they redirect to the homepage. Unless the post contains no substance at all, I don't see the problem with allowing a thread to be shown but have a [removed] feature similar to reddit, because we would be able to see the comments this way.

For example, there was a thread criticizing the new deputy system. From the short passage I saw, it didn't seem to be that offending but I could be wrong. Thing is, mmorpg commented on the thread, likely to explain the reason for the deletion. Why aren't we allowed to see the reason why threads are deleted? I mean, they show up anyway, and there aren't as many people on the forums anymore so an extra thread here and there wouldn't seem to do much harm.

Mr. Basil (the site owner and administrator) has given us a policy that says complaints about the rules and suspensions are to be handled by submitting a ticket (BasilID-->Account-->Submit a Ticket) and not aired in the public forum. Tickets go directly to him, moderators are not involved in that process so complaints and appeals can be handled directly.

Threads which ask specific questions about rules and policies are often left in public so they can serve as explanations for everyone, but are locked after an answer is given to avoid them becoming general complaining threads.

Threads may be removed when they become flame-wars, or go so off topic they are no longer serving any purpose other than promoting further flaming or trolling.

I'm not sure exactly which thread you were referring to about criticizing the new Deputy system, but a number of Deputy reports about several threads have been evaluated and removed because the threads haven't been breaking any rules specifically. The "dimming" feature that had been applied to those threads has also been removed.

With a new feature involving so many people, it's going to take some time for everyone to get used to what is and is not expected and acceptable.
The Deputy system isn't a "Vote Down" feature for items users don't like or agree with, it's to be used to report threads or posts which actually cross the line and break Basilmarket rules.
Hopefully once people get the hang of it there'll be fewer misunderstandings about how it works.
