How are you supposed to level with this class early game? I thought getting to 4th job would alleviate my problems, but it really didn't. I have pretty much all of the damage link skills, a decent inner ability (30 str, 3% monster damage), on level equips, but at level 104 I do pitiful damage. I actually started using spirit claw over bomb punch to kill mobs faster. Is it meant to be this way?

Unfunded and early game, they're not fun or good at all. However they become really good bossers and decent mobbers. I wouldn't not recommend one if they interest you. Split op

To me, they have a great combination of skills for many purposes. The bind is great because it binds anything nearby and anything it catches while it is active (as opposed to a bind that only binds what it hits during an attack). The fire fox spirit skill bypasses boss skills that cause the player to attack for 1 damage. Soul splitter clones a monster (including many bosses) so that both the monster and its clone take damage when you attack either, effectively doubling your damage. No need to worry about buffs aside from Maple Warrior and hypers. All hits on a monster with 50% HP or less are automatically critical. Death mark lets you regain HP with an attack, even if a boss has HP locked you. Shade has both a forward and a backward teleport, as well as flash jump. There is a skill that revives you upon death with no EXP loss that has a 5 minute cooldown. Passive buffs include 20% total damage, 30% boss and 30% ignore enemy defense. Lots of HP, strong against most attacks, easy to fund and reasonably powerful. And the level 170 hyper attack is basically a "kill everything on the map for 10 seconds" attack. To me, this combination is ideal for mobbing, bossing, and just about any other situation you may find yourself in. But I main a Shade, so perhaps my opinion is skewed.

I loved my shade. Not having to buff after dying is always a good thing. I feel like they are naturally just good at bossing. You also have 2 lives and have great damage output. As it was mentioned before, they can get sorta dull over time, but if you don't mind then they are a great class if you like it.

shades are always good. best utility movepool + strong bossing. Only later will their bind and stuff get nerfed, but even then Shades are great classes.
as for "good for fun", shades are kinda monotone
