Question why are you guys so argumentative about religion?
[header]I'm not making this to antagonize anyone by any means. I'm genuinely curious as why. explain to me your thought process, and how it you came to be this way. also, please don't use the "omg its cuz [insert religious (or non religious) group here] is mean". because that's a very generic and unjustified excuse I've heard many times.[/header]
EDIT: Please don't explain why you dislike a certain belief system (or none at all). Explain as to why you feel the need to invalidate another and build up yours.
Basically what I'm asking is... example: there are people in the world who are prejudice racist sexist etc. instead of asking them why they dislike ___, i'm trying to ask them (you guys) as to why they feel the need to behave in such a manner, and how it started. (not that i am calling you racist or sexist, i was using that as an example).
Underestimating the chauvinistic enforcement religions make IS over simplifying
I wasn't underestimating it in anyway. I just think it's important to point out other factors that aid in enforcing it.
Its a very large, complicated, interesting debate.
Lol, It's human nature to want to be correct
I edited the thread giving a more in-depth guideline as to what exactly i'm asking you, since most of you who have posted missed the point entirely.
@chema: objectification of women happens outside of religion all the time. it's rooted in patriarchy and gender norms that vary between societies. to blame that all on religion is kinda over simplifying it imo.
Funny... just explained it earlier today.
I used to be christian, until I came to basil and entered the chat section during the times when religion was always the biggest topic. I'd argue, and argue, and argue, but I never really had anything to support myself. I became atheist when I came to agreement with the idea that we should assume he doesn't exist until there's enough compiled evidence. Taking to youtube and finding users like TMA, I was basically set in stone once again, but on a different side.
What I think about religion now is pretty simple. I think that NO ONE should be assuming God is real. I think that we should all say he isn't, until enough evidence is compiled. It's not like I force that on people though. I kinda feel like the atheist community is growing, anyway. A lot thanks to the anonymity of the internet.
Edit: To answer your original question ( sorry got lost writing that,)
People aren't too embracing of different ideas.
The Saint Inquisition
The crusaders
Al-Qaeda
Muslim bombings
Objectification of women
Slavery of black people
The sun revolves around earth
Chop off lefties' left hand
Need more motives to shun off religions?
PROTIP: Religion =/= God; Religion =/= Believing in God
because the general IQ of people on basil isn't exactly... impressive. religion will always be a topic of debate, but when you throw 13 year old kids who happen to be 100% sure they're correct it gets annoying. ironically it's always the atheists making threads about religion saying ____ this type of religion has people who are annoying always talking about their god when they're the ones constantly making threads about it.
Why would you ask this question?
Because for ages I've seen people on this website harass each other over such arguments to the point where it became personal. I'm curious how many of them became that way, and etc.
inb4 "hur dur god's not real!1!1"
Cause some people believe that their opinion is a truth, an undeniable truth that they must fight for
Why would you ask this question?
