Try Accel World. It's pretty interesting, good voice acting, good animation, good music, and made by the same person who made Sword Art Online.

i would have suggested kamikaze kaitou jeanne because it's absolutely adorable (the romance) while still managing to have a good, serious plot, but i don't think you'd like a shoujo anime ;;
this isn't very good because i usually just watch shoujo stuff, aha (and even that i don't really watch that much). like, i've watched sailor moon (the anime gets really tedious, meaning that it's not really for everyone, and the manga is just a better adaptation, so i wouldn't suggest that), pretty cure, kamikaze kaitou jeanne, some pretty cure series, etc. i've also watched like free, which isn't a shoujo series per se, but it's definitely targeted at a female audience with a lot of cutesy moments.

i guess you should watch puella magi madoka magica! brilliant deconstruction of the magical girl genre (which i love very much) with dark, psychological elements. while it's technically a magical girl, it's not a shoujo series at all.
