Need chemistry help Balancing Redox equations

Okay, so I know that you start by removing the spectator ions that don't change oxidation number and then you split into half equations and then proceed to balance ions and so forth as necessary and then you add those two half equations together for your final equation but in some of the balancing questions I've done, you put the spectator ions back into your final equation? When will I know when to do that.

I think it would help me understand what you are trying to ask if you gave a sample problem

When you write a full ionic equation then all ions including spectator ions are included. However, when you write a net ionic equation you cross out all of the spectators. Maybe? I don't know what you're talking about exactly. Perhaps post a picture.
