you can still do that... but damage is based on your range since big bang, damage is a lot higher than before the change too.
It's also better to just use coins from pickpocket which is a lot faster than dropping.

Pretty sure it was changed to match your attack range after BB. Hackers used to use godmode, stand in front of Zakum and ME the stones out of him.
