My opinion on Kony 2012

I'm pretty sure I'll get a lot disagreement on my views, but I'm tired of all the people "supporting" the movement against STOP KONY 2012.

First things first, I am incredibly impressed with the vast number of people that are willing to raise awareness and participate in this movement. However, the main problem I have against the people supporting KONY 2012 is that I believe a lot of them are bandwagoners, so to speak.

Social media is extremely influential and that's a fact. It's very heart-warming seeing that so many people are raising awareness on a topic that battles economic and social issues. Awareness and understanding of the situation is key to solving a global issue, but what angers me the most is the people that share the topic in order to receive likes or praise from others.

Awareness is good, but the what about the application and consistency of this ideology after the movement is over? With a society like ours being so wasteful and wrapped around money, truly how many people will be willing to give up luxuries and actually fight against other social issues?

I respect the people who dont wait for these events to arise, and they have it in the back of their minds at times even when theres no hype or pressure forcing you to follow anyone or anything.

Famine, poverty, homelessness aren't new issues; they have existed for thousands of years. So why do people spread the word now instead of all the other times they could have done before? Even KONY's been around for several years already.

Raise awareness; get people to support the movement to get the American government involved in stopping and capturing Kony. Even if the "fad" only lasts for a short time, it could be enough.

The thing is though, bandwagoners are still getting the word out which is what this movement is really all about. If it's successful, it will be a marked down as a point in history where kids from all over the world, people just like you and me, were able to raise awareness about a man who kidnaps, uses children, and claims to praise god. He's been doing this for over twenty years. I don't understand how you could hate on people trying to do good. Whether they don't care or not, they're doing their part to spread the word and that's all that matters. Yeah, maybe a few people sharing a page on facebook won't do anything, but that isn't the case because this isn't a few people. You even mention "why now?". I say better now than never. This is a good place to start.

I think in this case the ends justify the means.
Sure, the movement will most likely not have any lasting effects, but the important thing is that it gets the job done. The world is never going to be perfect but that's just a fact you have to accept.

Because it makes people feel like they're doing something, when they're really not. Makes them feel good inside. Makes them feel like they're helping.

>Omgzzz I share dis page on facebook, I save da worldzz lOL!
>Continues doing whatever they normally do.

The people who bandwagon are probably gonna stick until 4/20 (day where they're gonna put up the posters) then just forget all about it. It's more than just signing a petition or two, or sharing a few facebook pages or changing your facebook profile picture. It's fixing it for the long term, and I bet 90% or more is in there for the hype.
