Psa Patch/Server Check Durations

Hello, everyone.

This is a Public Service Announcement for all you kiddies in the community.
As we all know, (at the time of this thread), there is a patch going on. The patch information given out claims that the patch will take "approximately 5 hours" to complete.

Now, almost everyone here knows what is likely going to happen when those 5 hours are up - a massive wave of players will rush to the website like shoppers to the mall on Black Friday, only to find that the patch will not be done, likely with a message saying the patch will take "approximately" another hour or few. Naturally, like selfish, impatient and overall whiny people the community mostly comprises of, butthurt and with nothing better to do, they will return to their respective Maple fan forums (such as Basil) and begin posting comments against Nexon and how they can't ever keep to a schedule and so-on and so-forth until the patch finally does end.

Boys and girls of Basil, this is not a new occurance. This is a normal circumstance that has happened almost every time there is a patch or server check/maintenence. The reason for this is simple and shown directly in every single site announcement:

The patch or server check/maintenence is only ESTIMATED to be done at the projected time, so long as everything goes properly. The time is an APPROXIMATION, not factual. THE TIME IS NOT AND HAS NEVER BEEN SET IN STONE!

This is why they say "the patch will last for approximately XX hours" - it's an estimate based on the work needed to be done assuming everything works properly.

Remember, they have to implement the patch, do tests and make sure everything is still running before they can open the servers back up. Anything from their servers or systems crashing to a power outage to just their computers running slightly slower than expected will cause a delay. Heck, when downloading a file, how often have you seen the "Time Remaining" number jump from 5 minutes to 20, then down to 3, then up to an hour? The computer is trying to make a guess based on the current situations under the assumption that everything is running in it's maximum possile performance.

So, before anyone begins getting bent out of shape over a patch or server check/maintence extention, remember that you were expecting nothing more than a rough guess to be right within 1 second... which is not likely.

Also, fun fact for those people upset over 1 or 2 hour extentions... a few years ago, a patch caused Nexon's servers to go down for over 24 hours. If you thought that was inconvenient for players, consider that, for those 24 hours, Nexon staff were scrambling to figure out what had happened. That means that some employees were likely there working for 24 hours STRAIGHT... and YOU'RE taking a hissy fit that you can't play a game?

For those "tl;dr" folks out there...
Patch and Server Check/Maintenence times are "approximate" times. They are based roughly on "so long as everything goes perfectly". They are not factual times. Do not waste time posting threads whining about duration extentions - you were expecting something that was never set in stone to begin with.

You'd be surprised how often I've had to make a thread like this over the years I've played...

And yeah, the 24 hour extention did happen. You can bet Basil was up in arms over it (which is pretty much a Tuesday for the community on this site...)
