It's to emphasize the prison life that they've been forced under. Having never seen the opposite sex there's no way to relieve the tension. The anime isn't afraid to put anything in and that's why it's so much more refreshing to watch then all those other sappy animes this year.

The best animes of 2014 are Sinodia no Kishi / Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis and Gekkan shoujo nozaki kun if you are into romance
Everything else that came out this year is a level blow them.
