I'm assuming you have nothing, so I would do Gollux prequests + Commerci prequests. Those two are big money makers, but their prequests are tedious and long to do.

I think you should receive some box that gives Maplepoints and other stuff? It's something Nexon's giving to inactive player accounts. There's a lot of important things that came out, I would suggest
you read patch notes. I think you'll catch up to all the updates if you play the game.

Better or worse? A lot of people would probably say worse, but I think Nexon's making a little effort to make it less "pay-to-win":
1. Maple Rewards system - you get points from playing in Star planet, and doing killing bosses (50pts per boss). You can cash in these points for stuff in Cash Shop in the "Maple Rewards Shop". This includes cubes, scrolls, and some NX items, but there are limits (ex. 5 cubes purchasable per month).
2. The best current scrolls are used by collecting Spell Traces (note: collect crusader coins and cash them in Edelstein shop 20 coins = 100 traces).
3. Elite Bosses (mainly benefits botters, but w/e) these drop clean slates, prots, and cubes.
4. Oh! Apparently Nexon just increased cube drop rate of bosses, so cubes are available without means of paying with cash. (Slow, but still free)
I'm not sure what else I missed, I'll comment again if I think of anything.

Anyways, welcome back to Maplestory!

EDIT: I would also try to join some active guild asap, makes the game more fun!
