External Hardrive question

Hello Basilmarket!

I have a question about my external hard drive. So I formatted it so I could use it with my wii but the problem is I wanna use it for my computer also. So is it possible to only use half of the hard drive for my wii and the other half for my computer?

Thank you.
If your computer doesn't recognize the Wii format now, it still probably wouldn't be able to if you partitioned the drive into two separate sections, one for Windows and one for Wii.

This used to happen a lot when people would partition their hard drives to put both Windows and Linux on the computer. The Linux partitions would just appear to Windows as unformatted disk space.

If it can be done, a Wii forum would probably be the place to check on it, because they'd be the ones who would know about stuff like that.
Ah I see. In that case I'll go find a Wii forum. Thanks for the tips bro.
Do you mean you want to keep the two sections separate from each other..?

I'm not familiar with how the Wii stores files, but from what I've read the disk format should be compatible with your computer. It's an older format called "FAT32", but it still works with newer Windows computers. You should be able to plug it into the computer and use it there too, IF the Wii file setup is similar.

Otherwise, yes you could "partition" the drive into two separate "partitions" and use each half for one or the other system. There might be some restrictions on that depending on how the Wii accesses the disk, but you might be able to either Google for more info about it, or ask on a Wii forum to see if anyone else has ever done it successfully before.
Well I don't remember what I formatted it to. It's been awhile since I last formatted the HDD. But when I plug it in the computer asks me to format it. I can't seem to access the HDD either. And partitioning is the word I was looking for.

So would the wii still be able to recognize the "other side" of the HDD even if theres 2 different formats on one?

Thats kinda what I wanted to say.

And thanks for the responses guys.

OMG i have a hacked wii too, but I don't have a usb large enough to hold games so I just simply use the IMG burn method. I was saving up for a laptop, but because I found out that I am able to jail break the ps3, I am getting a ps3, and GETTING MASS GAMES for it

It's part of a series of hacks that allows the Wii to access an external hard drive like any other computer (PC, Mac, Linux.) Creating a partition will not be necessary unless you have files larger than 4 GB. There are even instructions somewhere on how to run Windows on the Wii.
