help with WinRar please?

So I've been downloading .rar files and Winrar gives me error messages and shows it is empty.

I have tried multiple files.
I have tried more than one download.
I have tried different browsers for download.
I have tried to "empty cache".

What's the problem / fix here?

( If it helps, earlier I downloaded a .exe file and it said "not a valid win32 application&quot

Have you tried unRaring files you downloaded on a different computer yet?
Ones that unRared correctly on the other computer?
I am using it wirelessly.
On the same connection, (like 2 weeks ago) my old computer had no problems like that.
That also points to something being wrong with the new computer.
If the old one didn't have download problems, it's not likely to be the Internet connection unless something changed in that time period.

As far as checking to see if a driver update might have anything to do with it, you should probably download and install the newest WiFi driver for your computer.
If there's a problem with the driver currently on the system that might help.

Have you ever done driver updates before?
If the files open OK on both computers when you use the "move by USB drive" option, that would call your Internet connection into question again, unless the other computer you use to download them is using the same Internet connection (in the same house).

Is the computer with the problem plugged directly into the router with a cable, or are you using wireless for it?
I have downloaded a lot of things on this successfully.

I'll try to get the files on a USB from another computer ASAP.

If it works (files open there and here) what could be the problem?

Could there be an update im missing?

Those error messages indicate the file is corrupt, normally from the download process.

RAR has an automatic checking mechanism that checks the files to see if they're intact before it will open them, and apparently it's finding the files are damaged.
The same with that new error message. The NSIS Installer is discovering the contents of the file are damaged, and so it won't install the file.
The "Not a valid Win32 application" message indicates the same sort of thing for an executable program. When Windows tries to run the file, there are errors that won't allow it to run normally.

This page explains the NSIS error and gives a few suggestions about what to try: http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Why_do_I_get_NSIS_Error

I wouldn't suspect the anti-virus or Internet security- they would simply block the download if it contained viruses, they wouldn't cause the files to be corrupted.
Normally I'd suspect your Internet connection is giving you a lot of download errors, but- the fact it's a new computer might be suspicious.

Have you ever successfully downloaded anything with the new computer?

While it's not usual, it's possible there's a problem with the computer, specifically the hard drive, hard drive controller or cables that is causing the data to be corrupted when it's saved to the hard drive.
This could cause any new programs or files that are added to the computer to be randomly corrupted. It's possible some might work OK, while others would have problems like you've mentioned.

If you have access to another computer, one experiment that might be helpful would be to try downloading the RAR files on the other computer and try unRARing them on that computer.
If it works OK there, try copying the RAR files from the other computer (the same ones you just unRARed successfully) to a USB flash drive and copy them to the new computer, then try unRARing them there.

This would eliminate the Internet download as the cause, and if you get the same sort of errors when you unRAR them on the new computer after they worked OK on the other computer, it would indicate something wrong with the new computer.

One file is the Google Sketchup .exe

a few more are mods for skyrim, although i have working mods from that site.

for the .exe it says Not a valid win32 application.
for the compressed files, im getting the file name, then it says file is corrupt.

**Just tried to download something new, a new error

could it be my antivirus? my norton internet security?
This is a new computer if it makes a difference.

Where are you getting the files from?
What do the error messages say?

It sounds like the files you've downloaded may be corrupted during download, or they're damaged wherever it is you're getting them from to begin with.
