It's actually a very big deal, atleast here in NA.
People are all gun-hoe about personal space in this region where as every other places are so compact you have no choice but to surrender some space. Hell the only place here in Toronto where people don't care about personal space is Train/Bus. Otherwise most would be cheesed if you were near them and not known.
