YES! this is what i mean, im more nervous about the inside of my teeth hurting vs cuts and pokes of wires and the sting of the antiseptic orw/e that needle is
It's not really a hurting feeling like the pain you're used to. It's not like if you trip and fall and scrape your knee where it stings; it's more dull.

Take your finger and press on your front tooth. Not extremely hard, but enough to feel a little pain. That's what you'll feel but on all of your teeth. You get used to it.
I got braces when I was either 13 or 14. Putting on the braces and changing the wire at the dentist doesn't hurt at all. It's after you get the braces on that hurts.
I had them on for a little less than two years. As for wearing a retainer I only wore it for like a month after I got my braces.
My mom made me get them, but since she works at a dentist office we got them cheap.
And braces look fine on people who are younger, so get them now while it's acceptable.

As for the hurting it's not sharp pains. At first you'll have just the braces on without the wire. This hurts the most because your gums aren't used to the braces. You'll probably get them stuck in your gums and it'll hurt for a little bit but eventually you get used to it.

When the wire goes on (normally the week after or so) the insides of your teeth will hurt. I can't really explain the pain but I remember I ate nothing but pudding and soup for about three days. You'll get used to it and every once in a while you'll have to go back and get a new wire. The new wire will make your teeth hurt again because it's tighter but it won't hurt as much as when you got them. Eventually you'll get rubber bands to put on the braces. Those make your teeth hurt again depending on how tight they want the rubber bands.

But don't worry. It may sound painful but it's one of those things where it doesn't make you feel like you're in a lot of pain. It's more of a dull pain and you know when it's coming so it doesn't hurt that much. To tell the truth, I actually liked the pain after a while. Like with the rubber bands.

Oh I miss my braces!

Oh, and as for wax, you're supposed to use it so that the braces don't hurt your gums, but honestly I never used it.

start of grade 6 to the start of grade 9, felt good to have braceless teeth after having them for all of middle school.

Expect to use a lot of wax near the back of your teeth and going into the orthodontist to have the poking wires cut.

edit: for how long ppl have them, varies how bad their teeth are; my brother got his off way earlier than i did
for the wires. you actually have to leave the dentist and go else wear to get them off? btw i think i have to pull 4 teeth out before i put the braces on LOL
