Best free would be either BitDefender or avast!, since Microsoft security essentials has been falling behind (recently) in their virus, malware, etc. detection rate.
Also be sure to download malwarebytes free for their free but powerful malware scanning and removal capability. (It works alongside most antivirus software and will not slow down your system.)

Also, although good caution is still recommended with or without an antivirus software. Having antivirus isn't that bad unless your computer is from the 90's. Also what you suggest about the dangerous website from mcafee will only take you so far, there are thousands if not millions of websites appearing on a daily basis, mcafee will not be able to pick up everything on every new site, which could still get you a virus.

Common sense is not an antivirus dumbass, stop suggesting it as an alternative which is not

The best Anti Virus is your self.
I mean if you don't click on websites you don't know you won't get a virus, and it slows your computer down since it keeps on scanning your computer for harmful threats.
I used to have Avast it is great though but after i learned about "Mcafee Siteadvisor" Anti Virus is so useless.
What it does it when ever you visit the website, it will do a very quick look at the ratings on the website, then if it is a good website it will let you in (this process takes like 0.11111 Milliseconds) and if it is kinda of risky it will display a Yellow button, and if it is dangerous it will tell you, you should leave.
It also works on Google web search, the displayed result, next to it there is 3 colors Green Yellow and Red.
microsoft security essentials. been using that for years, scans always clean, never found a single problem LOL
Seconded - it has a pretty small footprint as well, which makes the fact that it's free even better.
