I personally believe that it's popular doesn't play that big of a role in its score. There are a lot of anime that have a higher score than it on MAL despite them having relatively close ranks in terms of MAL's popularity rankings. Of course, this is just my belief though.

WA2 is excellent. I've never read it being criticized for its ending though. It seems that everyone who gave it a fair chance enjoyed it. It's understandable why it didn't have a bigger following while airing though. It sounds like a direct sequel to WA, and WA was relatively mediocre from what I've seen many years ago.

My only complaint is that a Closing Chapter + Coda adaptation hasn't been announced yet.

I think a major reason as to why people didn't like WA2 is because of what happened. They expected some sunshine and rainbows romance with perfect characters, but instead, got a depressing yet realistic and relate-able romance with flawed characters. I honestly believe it doesn't get the credit it deserves because of personal feelings

White Album 2 was amazing.
I only wish White Album 2 had a completely different title because the reason it is underrated is because many people think it is a direct sequel to White Album 1 and that you needed to have watched the first one, whereas the only same thing is that both series is in the same universe.

When I was (trying) to watch WA1, I'm not sure why but I found it really convoluted and bland (or maybe that's just my hazy memory of it right now) and dropped it at the beginning of the second season. It was likely just 3deep5me but I'm not sure if I'll pick it up again.

WA2 was a blast tho.
