National Anthem Question

So I've always been wondering, whenever the person singing the National Anthem gets to the part, "For the land of the FREEEEEE!" everyone starts cheering like crazy. Why do they cheer? Is it because of the word "Free" or is it because it's a really hard note to hit?

Because they believe that the US is the only country in the world that has freedom.

Because they usually embellish the anthem by then so it gets applause for being creative or risky with that measure.
I remember reading the sheet music to this and seeing that the song ends with "and the home of the brave?" so I think people have been singing the ending wrong all this time

I always thought it was the latter.

Even Landon Donovan thinks America should have lost to Ghana. Hahahahahahahaha
