Madhouse is a great studio. The problems come from the source materials. If the source material is pure crap then obviously the anime will be crap.

two things to consider: a studio name is just a name, the people who are actually behind a show + animating it matter most. for a current example, you've got BONES doing (at least?) two shows this season, so obviously their better anim crew is on one or the other *cough*CptEarth*cough*. i would assume MadHouse is big enough to also have a same situation, meaning just bc they're doing a show, it isn't necessarily their best.

second would be that people have to pay the bills. it's why you see actors take parts in absolutely horrible movies, bc they're still getting paid. it's not plausible to sit on your hands waiting for "good" anime projects to come along, so you get studios dabbling in mediocrity or otaku schlock. more recently DavidPro took a break from JoJo's to do Hyperdimension Neptunia of all things. though in any case, the terrible things studios often do in off time are the sorts of things that should also be pretty popular/profitable (see Neptunia above, recent anime like Sonico, etc)

@Fluxxxxx: I forgot they assisted in Casshern Sins, thats one of my favorite anime Generally though I find their new series more enjoyable than the old ones. Except Mahou Sensou. That was terrible.

How can you make that argument that they sucked before? Most of the shows they already did a while back like black lagoon, redline, and summer wars don't make Death Note shine that brightly. CASSHERN SINS TOO. Recent shows like Sunday Without God, Mahouka, and Mahou Sensou were pretty damn bad. NGNL is good, but definitely over-hyped. They did have their misses in the past, for example Chaos;Head, but they've been adapting too much crap , it seems like a routine to make "bad" anime now.

I liked Kamina's use of colors (i.e. gradient hair) in ItsuTen, but NGNL's color scheme is blindingly awful half of the time.

And NGNL is almost an exact replica of Mondaiji, except with more unnecessary weeb pandering. Just because someone throws in a Skyrim or JoJo joke doesn't make an anime good; if I wanted references, I'd watch Nyaruko-san. The source material is hardly entertaining, but at least it's infinitely better than Mahouka.

I'm enjoying NGNL and a lot of other people seem to agree. it has amazing art and colors, let alone entertaining source material.

mahou sensou was bad but NGNL is amazing.

i think every studio got it wins and fails.
also, if a studio is only failing, they would go bankrupt very fast.

i mean, look at shaft. if it were not for bakemonogatari, the year 2009/2010 was only consisting of anime which only barely managed to get in the minimum money they need to survive. luckily bakemonogatari turns out to be one of the most sold anime ever, resulting them to animate the rest of it.

many other studios didnt have their "bakemonogatari" saving themself, resulting insolvence

I don't understand it either, but apparently the thing is that the majority of the anime fandom WANTS to see fan-pandering, generic crap like Mahouka and NGNL.

Madhouse is capable of making legitimately good shows, but psshhh who wants THOSE? amirite guiz? :^)

Not everything from a studio will be gold. Some things are even worked on by different groups inside the studio.

Still, if Redline (for example) is any showing, Madhouse is doing just fine.

NGNL is pretty good...

Madhouse just chooses to adapt already bad source material, they're fine at the adaptations themselves.

Hunter x Hunter is still going strong though so I could care less about anything else they're doing at the moment.

I'm kind of iffy. They're responsible for some great stuff like Trigun, Gunslinger Girl, Monster, Deathnote, Claymore, Hunter x Hunter, etc., but at the same time, they're responsible for animating the monstrosity that is the Maplestory anime.

they also made Black Lagoon, which was really good from what i heard...
