Question about this

On other forums, sometimes people post links for pictures, but instead of clicking on the link, the picture is actually shown when a person puts up a thread.

Is there any security issue with that? I mean, obviously when you click on a link, it might be malicious, but instead of a link, you can literally see the picture in the thread... if you know what i mean..

And sometimes when you hover your mouse over the picture, it'll tell you the link e.g imgur.com/blahblah

Also, when you load threads like those, you will notice it says on the very left corner of your screen on google chrome, "waiting for (insert website name)"

What if that website name is malicious? But you didn't click on the link, but it just automatically shows you the picture of it on the thread?

There's no current way for picture files to be malicious, other than popping up adult stuff or whatever in the picture.
If the site is half-way competent the code that embeds the image will only accept legitimate picture file formats so executable stuff that can contain viruses will be blocked.

One way to help protect against malicious sites is to use a "Known bad web site blocker" program like "Spyware Blaster" and keep it updated.
This program keeps lists of sites that are known to host malicious content and blocks your browser from even going to those sites so you're protected from things like "drive-by downloads" where you don't even have to click on something to be infected.
There's a free version that you have to remember to update every week or so, and a paid version that automatically updates itself so it's always current to block new bad sites.

Basil had that a long time ago, but then people can easily spam inappropriate stuff.
