Can you graduate without community service hours

Do you need community service hours to graduate, say, from 9th grade to 10th, or 10th grade to 11th, etc. Or is it just recommended to have community service hours? Thanks

edit: And also I heard that you don't really need any proof of how much cc hours you have..so what's stopping people from just lying about their hours? Ugh wish that teachers would explain these things in class.

you usually have to do community service to graduate high school but it's not required to move on from grade to grade. they have some form you fill out and you need signatures from coordinators. of course, the teacher in charge isn't going to check but it's dangerous to forge the signature of an organization that many people get community service hours from.

that being said, I wouldn't recommend forging signatures if you're looking to get into a good university. universities look for well rounded individuals that can not only list their accomplishments but also show what they learned through their personal statements. being able to accumulate meaningful experiences through unique community service opportunities allows you to provide a much more interesting and unique personal statement. there are a lot of clique personal statements that people fall back on when they can't think of anything e.g. I was born in an Asian family with a tiger mom, or I struggle with cultural and language barriers within my Asian family. you'll have an easier time writing when you're writing about something you're really into so go out there and explore

My school requires 40 hours and we have to fill out couple forms and get them approved for them to actually "count" the hours. if you did not get the 40 hours you won't graduate.
That being said, volunteering should be something you WANT to do to better the community around you, not because you are forced to. There are so many different volunteer opportunities in your neighborhood, definitely ask the counselor or school career center for options and take advantage of them. Find something you enjoy doing and that helps others! I volunteered almost 600 hours, but most was working with kids, which is a big factor why I want to study and become a teacher in the future. Good luck! ^_^

It's extremely easy to lie about your hours, feel free to.
Wait, being from a country with no "community service hours" in school - are we talking about picking up garbage or what? And which school in their right mind would make that a prerequisite for graduation?
Picking up garbage is an option. A lot of people just do it at their church, library, or community storehouse. Helping out at some school functions and club activities can also get hours but it's usually random/one day when the group actually needs help. I volunteered at a race for a couple hours, handing out water bottles to the racers and cheering them on.
In general, I've noticed more private schools requiring it rather than public but some clubs like National Honor Society require it. If you do 100 or more hours in a year and have the sponsor sign documentation, you'll get an award from Green Cord and cords to wear at graduation. It's supposed to show dedication/giving back to the community but most of the people, including myself, just do it to look good on applications.

OP: You would need to ask your counselor if your school requires it. I live in North Texas and none of the public high schools in my district have it as a requirement. Normally, you need to print out a paper that the person you volunteered for fills out, along with contact information, so you have someone saying that yes, you did volunteer. Schools usually aren't dumb enough to take your word for it.

My school required 30hours for graduation, I lied for half of it .. Just change 3's into 8s. 1's into 7's .etc.

My school required community service and physical exercise hours too.
Most people lied for both of them. Why the hell are schools forcing these kinds of things down our throats?

I didn't do any any graduated and went into university without an issue, so I think it depends on where you are.

They might have changed things a bit-- but it wasn't a requirement for me when I was in HS. o.o or... well, I don't know. All I know is that I didn't have to do much volunteering.
I'm a volunteer for my city now though. =D It's fun and helps you feel like you're doing something right.

In Ontario, we need 40 hours to graduate. Not sure what happens if you don't meet the required amount, but I have around 300+. Not hard to do, just get out there and do something you like.

It depends on the school, mine requires 40 hours at least. It is easy to fake them, you can probably buy them somewhere off the internet because you need a legit phone number if they check. I was in the same boat as you, but I actually did my hours legit and it felt good.
If I were you, I wouldn't fake the hours. It's good to actually do it because you can put it on your university application or job application and it will look and feel better having real hours. You get work experience too.

It wasn't needed at my high school, you would just got some commendations when you graduated. I had a couple of friends who graduated with 200-400ish hours, and it reminded me of how I wasted my time playing video games and tennis.

But this is something you really should be asking your counselor.

My high school doesnt require it, I've done 75 hours in sophomore year though.

Well in Ontario, yes you do. But it's only like 40 hrs now come on guys really. I finished all my 40 hrs in grade 12 at once. It can be good experience, so just do it.

My high school needed 40 hours to graduate, you will move to the next grade even if you didn't get your hours but you will need the hours to graduate.
As for checking how many hours you need, you can ask your counselor/staff or in your end of the (year/semester) report [might not apply to you].

I cheated my hours, I picked up some garbage and my neighbor gave me 4 hours.

At my school I was able to avoid comm service hours by taking AP Euro history instead of the regular history class (which is where comm service hours was required).

OT You should probably ask people at your school (like staff and teachers) since your school may have different requirements than those of other basilers.

in florida you don't repeat high school years, you just move onto the next and need to make up for it (which they don't remind you about ever) and if you don't then you get dropped from the school

It's all dependent on your school. My school requires 45 hours each year for an A, while another school in my district requires only 30 hours in total for graduation. Ask your counselors or teachers. Usually, you don't have to repeat a grade (I think) cause it's counted as a minor subject

Wow and I thought my 40 hours (which I even cheated) was bad...

My school actually didn't require any community service hours to graduate.
But, I was apart of this medical program where you required to accumulate at least 200 hours of various types of community service. I ended up getting double that.

My public high school you need 20 hours before you graduate. I think they're due a month before graduation. Either that or really, extremely close to graduation.
I already have 50 but I'm gonna submit about 30.
