JoJos Bizarre Adventure Stardust Crusaders Dub Premiere

Crunchyroll just announced they have exclusive rights to stream the first 3 episodes of a Stardust Crusaders dub, premiering July 5th at Anime Expo. The Anime Expo screening will also have a panel/Q&A with some of the producers of Stardust Crusaders. A small cast list can be found in the links below.

With this announcement, it really seems like The Year of JoJo. Stardust Crusaders set for 4 cours, a dub in the works, Viz reprinting the manga and translating Phantom Blood, and the possibility of a Diamond is Not Crash anime on the horizon (with enough support, so buy the BDs!). More details regarding the manga should surface at Viz's Anime Expo panel on July 3rd.

I watched episode 2 dubbed and it wasn't that bad, as far as dubs go. Jotaro's new voice seemed to give him more personality, which I actually kinda liked. The rest of the cast, Joseph was kinda cliche, but bearable, Avdol was okay, I guess (though I hated how they pronounced his name), DIO was fine, Holly was fine, the random characters that didn't mean anything were fine too. Only one that I kinda had negative opinions about was Kakyoin; I felt that he sounded a bit too snobbish.

Judging it based solely on ep 2, I think it'll be /okay/, but there are a lot of characters they've still yet to voice, so we'll see.

Edit: By the way I found a channel on youtube that had some clips recorded of the dub, so you can judge for yourself if you didn't hear. Take a look before it gets taken down. I'm sure there are more.

@HateSpirit: Joseph just isn't a combat character and it only bothers me because he then is given victim roles (this is so dumb) or less interesting fights because of it. Empress definitely benefitted from being animated, because it's otherwise one of many fights that never really stood out to me.
Having your power be unlimited, Ripple-conductive, thorn ropes would be pretty great if Joseph really used it. :V

@xoqtprincessxo: Joseph barely gets battles and is usually getting schooled. Like that in and of itself is spoilery but it sucks that Araki had to throw Joseph under the bus to make other characters shine/develop.

Saw some people posting good exmples of the confirmed voice cast/how they might play the characters so I'll share them here:

Patrick Seitz (DIO) voicing Dhaos from the Tales series. This will probably close to how he does DIO...hell, Dhaos even looks like DIO haha. Dunno if I mentioned it here, but Patrick Seitz also voiced Dracula in a bunch of the Castlevania games.
This one was probably obvious but...Richard Epcar (Old Joseph Joestar) voicing Batou from GiTS.
Matthew Mercer (Jotaro Kujo) doing various voicework for videogames. Only a few of these seem Jotaro-esque.

So I'm actually optimistic about the voice cast and excited to see how DIO is done...even if it won't be Koyasu levels of hammy.

@Deciduous I liked the wit of part 2 Joseph, but sometimes it just felt too gimmicky. He seemed to be the most 'spoiled' out of the leads, and was hardly ever serious (fights against Kars). He just seems more respectable in part 3, and still has his humour. The characters I liked the most in part 2 are probably Caesar and Wamu

Thinking about it now though, Hermit Purple is actually such an appropriate stand for him. His fight against Empress was clever
Watching part 3 again makes me feel bad for Suzie Q ;~;

@Deciduous I don't know dude, there's something about watching Joseph sprint around India trying to avoid getting beat up by a sentient tumor on his arm that is rly charming. He gets the best battles.

@HateSpirit: True. The best friendships and most (accidentally typed moe there, lmao) emotional moments hinge on those four (e.g. the Hanged Man arc). I just feel like Jotaro fills out the cast with those guys really nicely, while Joseph only contributes jokes? He loses most combat ability and even gets out-tricked.

e: I guess I'm not making a case for Joseph to not be in the cast, he just seems out of place in combat yet he can't keep up the usual mental acrobatics he's known for either. Hermit Purple has such weird implications as a Stand (non-combat, it's the same Stand that Johnathan had) and Joseph hates hard work so much he didn't bother maintaining his Ripple. The series as a whole (Part 2 to 3, and so on) arranges itself in a way that is really mean to Joseph's awesome rep in Battle Tendency. He's brings a ton of humor though.

@Deciduous It was mostly on the statement (the three best dudes). I don't think they'll have a voice for him either
But I like everyone in Part 3's cast still. I would even say I prefer part 3 Joseph over part 2

@HateSpirit: 1) I still want that to be a surprise for new viewers :0
2) I don't own the Viz translation for the part of the story he appears in, but scans are ambiguous as to whether he has an internal monologue (e.g. in his voice) or the narrator is speaking his thoughts. So they may not even cast someone aside from making random noises.
I wonder who'll do Dio-Sama's voice :v
here's him doing a bunch of voices that would be terrible for DIO
he did Raul Creed in the Ergo Proxy dub, which seems closest to a DIO-type voice. I honestly don't know more than three names in the US VA industry and it's not as if those three are necessarily any good...so idk who I'd prefer over him (if anyone).

But hey, it seems it'll be a decent dub, just maybe not able to measure up to Koyasu's DIO (wryyyyy, GOODBYE JOJO, etc).

They can not fail on the Kakyoin and Polnareff voice pick.
I will be agitated to no end.
Who could dub Joseph when he was dubbed by the Sugita.
Nobody currently in the voice acting pool, but that's a problem for if/when they decide to dub season 1.
I'm just hoping for a good Polnareff, Avdol, and Kakyoin (the three best dudes).

That's so true. Maybe it's just me but Sugita's voice fits so perfectly me for me. >.<
