Infinite series 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Series = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7... ---> infinity The answer blew my mind. What the concept of infinity does to our understanding of numbers is baffling. Vote for what you originally thought the answer was. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proving the output of the following infinite series: A = 1 - 1 + 1 - 1 + 1 - 1.... B = 1 - 2 + 3 - 4 + 5 - 6.... C = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6... ====A = 1 - 1 + 1 - 1 + 1 - 1....======================================= A can be written as: (1 - 1) + (1 - 1) + (1 - 1).... or 1 (-1 + 1) + (-1 + 1) + (-1 + 1)... So what is 1 - A? 1 - A = [1] - [(1 - 1) + (1 - 1) + (1 -

Russia Annexes Crimea And people still believe that this was a bad thing to do? Why Russia got involved (for dummies): So Ukrainians weren't happy with changes to policies (Constitution) made by their ex-President Yanukovych. Yanukovych agreed to compromise a deal that would hand powers back over to parliament effective December 2014. Despite this, protesters became violent and both militants and civilians were killed as rioters tried to take more ground. This Russian-supported president was illegitimately overthrown late February and fled to Russia. Protests got so violent (with buildings being destroyed and public services having to be stopped) that politicians and a large portion of the citizens of Crimea asked Russia to protect them[
Whats wrong with polygamy? What makes polygamy wrong?
This whole Russia in Crimea thing What do you think is going on? How is the mass media treating you? Should Russia back away from its supporters in Crimea, or should they come to the rescue while securing their Naval assets?
Which is worse? Which is worse: People believing that fluoride toothpaste is bad for you, or the belief that the minimum wage needs to triple? I ask because a lot of people actually believe in these two thoughts, but I can't decide which one is more dangerous to society.
The world outside of your bubble In light of watching the murder of a young woman and her mother in Thailand on Basilmarket, I wanted to bring up the following. Edit : I took it down. It's not appropriate even for the internet. PM me if you want to see it. It's a woman who gets beheaded alive on camera. She gets beheaded so quickly, that her eyes seem to shift around consciously to try to get a look at her murderer before she fades out. Below 18 I think that it is very fortunate for developed nations to have borders and good law enforcement to deter this kind of gang violence, but it's also unfortunate that the safety of being a citizen of a developed nation makes said citizens c
Things you have to deal with So I took my lady out on a date to Little Tokyo the other day. We ate at a pretty good instant noodle shop, but then I saw a bunch of people wearing these weird costumes. As we were walking along, she wanted to go into this Japanese comic book store and look at the little books that Japanese cartoonists make with samples of their concept art. There was a pretty intense Japanese cartoon playing on the little television with a bunch of little girls shooting energy arrows and other bizarre things. Lots of people seemed to wear very bright costumes that day. The bookstore had a section with fountain pens, which I was actually pretty happy about. What kind of things do you put up with in regards to your significant o
Lets talk about food What food did you eat today, and how much did you spend? When did you buy restaurant food, and when did you eat home cooked meals? Me : Brunch @ McDonalds : Big Mac + small fries + unsweetened ice tea = $7.00 total. Homemade lunch @ home : T-bone steak + Papaya salad + potato salad w/ grilled onions & garlic on top + mango/strawberry/blueberry smoothie = $6 for the steak, and probably around $2-3 for the other portion of items; $9.00 total. Dinner : A cup of blueberries, and some cereal. Hm. ---------- Edit: I... I guess I should add this to the thread: How often do you guys eat out and how often do you eat at home? Me: I eat out at sit down restaurants a few times a week [moderately spending $30 ~ $50 each time] an
Ask a veteran I used to be someone who thought that people who didn't see opportunities were too dumb to pursue them. I always wondered why people in poverty were stuck in poverty, when information all around them would otherwise help them break out of it. Why would somebody pay 24.7% credit card interest on small items? Why would anybody not make an investment to move away from their current state to another place with a lower cost of living if they aren't satisfied with the way they're being paid in a largely populated metropolitan area? Why do people think that education is a waste of time and money, when it's really an improvement in human capital? A normal cynic may assume that one unable to see these things deserve to rot in the wage
Capital Gains Tax So for the people who has capital gains as a part of their income, I have a question. Would an increase in capital gains tax up to 20% from 15% deter you from investing into the market you are in? This question is specifically for people who understand the risks as well as the strain in the trade. Feel free to offer opinions even if you don't have any interest in these kind of investments, but don't expect for me to take any speculation too seriously if you wouldn't actually be directly affected by a tax hike in capital gains. Edit : Sorry for exposing my ignorance, but this question applies to other nations as well [I guess the numbers were specifically American]; would an increase by 5 to 10 % of your nation's current ra
Affordable Care Act It has been a long time since I've come onto Basil. I'm not sure if this place is still filled with the capacity to answer the following question: Is the cost of the Affordable Care Act worth the benefits? Come children; gather around and discuss. Liberal arts majors encouraged; engineers and science majors preferred.

A question for you anti-gun members of society Why should we ban guns? What problem will that solve? Every time I ask myself this question, I cannot answer it rationally without the answer being countered. Somebody help me understand why people want to ban guns.
