You people aren't thinking realistically, say for example if you went to Italy what would you actually buy?
Not really sure why everyone is suggesting bread, as it's terrible in Italy. Personally I got one of those masks in Venice. I also left some pigeon poop in front of the pope's grave. There was also one of these glass blowing people somewhere, whom I bought a glass cat from.
I'm not much for a souvenir person to be honest, but those two things I still have.

alternatively you should probably ask for non perishable food? If it were me i would ask for a fancy keychain because I collect them

specifically panettone (sweet, with candied fruit) or ciabatta (usually a white, yeasty bread) fococcia (flat bread with dimples) etc.
you can get an authentic italian sourdough but after a few feeds it's going to be your own anyway so it;s really not worth it, except that it will have been alive for a long time + is ready to use
