What is college life like?

Just curious since I'll be going to college in what, 3 years? ._. Really curious though...
How many hours do you study?
If a college student has a part time job when does he do it?

My freshman year sucked. I don't like to party and I hated my dorm. I had 2 friends all year. They were awesome friends, but freshman year still sucked.
Sophomore year is awesome now. I still don't go out an party, and I'm having a fantastic year. I'm in a music sorority (NOT a social sorority) and it's fantastic, I love the people in it and I love living here. I'm also in marching band. Then taking the standard 4 classes (I'm on the quarter system, not semester). Then I have 2 part time jobs, one at a non-for-profit and the other reffing IM sports (which I also play). During marching band, I worked a total of 9hrs a week. Now that band is over, I will probably work ~15 hours a week. One of my jobs is during the normal 9-5 so I don't have a lot of time for it, the other one is at night and is more flexible. I spend between 1-6hours studying every day (studying includes doing homework, doing reading, etc etc). As for how much free time you have, you sort of dictate that yourself. To the guy on page 1 who was talking about parties and all that stuff every night, your grades are going to plummet. I don't skip classes. You can be a scholar and have a social life. It's pretty cool ^^ You just have to find the right balance - that was tough for me because I refused to get swept up in anything just because of social pressure, and that's probably what made freshman year tough. But I only do the things I want to do and now it's awesome

@WorkOfArt: Maybe you guys are correct in that sense. And yes I do often get sick of constant parties which is true. Im merely pointing out you can party as much and as hard as you want, long as its counter balanced with lots of study as well.

-Don't party too much
-Know your priorities
-Talk with people
-Adjusting for the first semester
-Don't take anything too far

i thought this was common sense
First off, don't listen to the guys who say that you'll get laid immediately or you'll be going to parties every friday and saturday without exception. Unless you belong in the group of kids who simply don't deserve to be in college and make waste of their parent's money by neglecting everything aside from partying, you won't be partying twice a week.

You're going to have a lot of new experiences. Drinking parties, hanging out with friends, hell, even drinking just for the heck of it with only two other people. Might I remind you that drinking parties and clubbing definitely exist and you'll be doing them quite often, but you need to control yourself. I suggest you make good friends with the people in your dorm... that would really get you going in terms of having connections and always having somewhere to go.

Your first semester won't be the absolute best. For the first two months, you'll be rushing to make new friends and meet new people. Once those two months pass, you'll be set with a group of friends. The good news is, these two months occur in the beginning of every semester. Really take advantage of this time and you'll be a social butterfly. Don't overdrink in parties, no one thinks its "cool" when you're drunk off your ass and you're forced to get carried back by a nice girl. If you're going to start a relationship, start it fast. People don't want to wait
well there's two type of people there ones who take education seriously, then you have 90% of my age group who act like freaking idiots, they party, they do drugs and nasty crap, and im not talking about guys, im also talking about the women that go there, sure there's actually nice girls there but you have those that are just as stupid if not worse than the moronic males that go to college -_- just have this piece of advice study hard and ace high school, once you're in college, yeah have friends and party every once in a while but don't over do it

My brother is doing Mechanical Engineering. He's far from a loser, he parties at LEAST twice a week except during exams and the one week before them. His grades are in the 80-90 percents mostly. He knows plenty of pretty girls who he parties with. So you can in fact party as much as you want in college, with proper time management.

Edit: forgot to mention, I'm basically the same except decided to go into Social Work after Christmas, i had the grades for it and I partied just as hard.
That would reflect his partying. If he plans to go to a good graduate school, that's not going to cut it.

OT: Basically what other people said. College is great, but you have to remember to keep your priorities straight. You'll spend a lot of time studying (usually 3-4 hours per credit hour), but you'll have more free time than you're used to. Remember to do everything in moderation. It's ok to party, but remember that you still have to get your work done.

it give you the freedom you always wanted but at same time make you think twice because you should be mature enough that if you dont study to be a professional youll fail and wont have a good life ...be free but be mature

No offense but 80-90 could be made to 93+ (maybe 90 is a 4.0 for your college, but 93 is 4.0 for me) without all that partying.

You think you're getting by just fine. It's your first year, it's always easy as hell. As for your brother, Mechanical Engineering is dependent on computational ability, not time spent studying. People studying law or government/politics, for example, need to study day and night. Engineering.. you only need to study if you don't know the methods. Some are naturals. Does this apply to everyone? No.

But you know, a lot of people like you exaggerate their party life. Without giving it a thought, I can say I go to a party every week. Looking at my cellphone calendar, I see that I've been to exactly 11 parties since the beginning of this semester, which is a bit less than once a week.

Also, partying... you're gonna get used to it. You can deny it all you want, I've seen people drop out, fail out, or destroy their lives due to overpartying. Just because you're raking in A's and B's right now doesn't mean you'll be doing so in the future. Even if you do end up succeeding, you'll be used to the party life, and you'll look for clubs and bars once you graduate, slowly sinking yourself into an alcoholic state and eventually harming those around you.

Then again, it's your life; under 4.0 isn't acceptable in my eyes considering I'm using my parent's money in order to attend college, and I want to succeed in the future and take advantage of this education.

Also yes, there are kids who can party hard, maintain a 4.0, maintain several clubs while being in significant positions in those clubs, altogether. Is the TS one of those people? Well, considering that less than 2% of all college students have 4.0 GPA, and even less out of those 2% party hard, and even less out of those 2% who can also participate in many clubs, I doubt anyone here is like that.
It's awesome. Wear whatever clothes you want, barely have to study anything, girls everyday [y'know], clubbing daily, epic house parties, chilling with friends, freedom from parents, get to know more about how to live like an adult. Only in my first year so far, but it's been truly epic. On the other hand, there are a lot of losers here so you could be one of them.
Yes lots of losers, such as those who pretend that they go clubbing every day.

Life is gonna be up to you. You manage everything; study habits, food intake, etc. It's up to you to be responsible enough to succeed in college.
You don't want to do become too far in either factor of college.
-The person who stays in his/her dorm all day. These people sometimes are a lot more successful with their grades, but it also stunts their ability to communicate effectively, quickly, and progressively.
-The person who parties too much. You party too much, you fail, your fault, not the professor's. Remember, you get used to everything.. if you party too much, you'll get used to that, and you'll end up partying too much even after college, which can be detrimental to your life.

Lots of free time... Which is kinda boring after a while.

@above, the same amount of time as a top 50 university. Just because a college is not an ivy league, does not mean the lower rank college is less intelligent. You need to study just the same amount of time to get the same degree.

@LordZubin:So if we assume you're not at a "good university"(top 50) and you were trying to get your bachelor's in 3 years. How many hours would you need to study a week(estimate?) My time management is fairly good as long as I'm not distracted by stuff like MS.

Well, for your second question, it really depends on what you plan to do. If you're trying to complete your Bachelor's in two to three years at a good university (Top 50), you'll be studying a lot. Maybe forty hours a week, however it also depends on time management and priorities. I can say that I only study and do homework for twenty hours a week even though I'll be getting my Bachelors' this Spring (this is my third year of college and I'm doing a double major), but I have almost true eidetic memory and I have superb time management skills.
Many students have part time jobs. I'm an intern at an engineering firm. Most of my friends work at restaurants, coffee shops, places like that.
College life... Well, it's pretty nice. A lot more freedom than high school, teachers don't harass you about work, but you have to keep up with it and talk to your professors on your own time. MIT has an eight to one student-to-faculty ratio, so it's pretty nice. Partying can be a hassle. MIT's known for it's crazy-ass parties which are thrown every other day. I, however, only go to a party once every three or four weeks, mostly because the university police and the Cambridge police have been "visiting" parties often for the past year.

Reply November 29, 2011 - edited

I really like college life. There's so much freedom.
I study less than I'd like but I usually study one thing at a time for hours if I do study. My workload is still easy-ish for now because they advice you to not challenge yourself on your first quarter.
Don't have a job yet but usually jobs in the university are flexible so it can fit into your schedule.
