Xbox 360 overheating question

Hey guys, long time no see. I apologize for the semi-long post. I've had my 360 for a good four years now. It's overheated every once in a while and it doesn't really bug me but today I've reached my limit. My system is on top of a book in an open area so that every vent is working. The PSU is sitting on top of the edges of an open cardboard box so that 99% of it is free in the air, also in an open area. I've been able to play games for 16 hours (don't ask) without one problem.

I bought SoulCalibur V today on disc and started playing. Everything was fine for my first hour but once I started playing Arcade Mode (six fights one after another like any fighting arcade game) my problems started. First time I played through it went fine but the second time I overheated in the fourth match. I let the system sit for a good half an hour, felt it cool to the touch, and started playing. Again, around the fourth/fifth round it overheated. This time I go a fan from another room and placed it so that it was constantly blowing on high at both the system and the PSU. Waited half an hour, started again. Without fail, halfway through arcade it overheated. I decided the fault was on the system using a disc since the majority of my games were downloaded. I started it up, downloaded the data from the disc to my harddrive, and started once again. Again it overheated in arcade. The system is never the problem as it always stays cool, but instead of the PSU being extremely hot to the touch like normal, it was just somewhat warm.

I stopped playing and went to class. Came home, did some other stuff, and finally started playing again after six hours. Everything was fine for an hour until it overheated again, in arcade mode. Does it have something to do with the game? I would imagine the constant loading and fighting of arcade mode would draw more power from the console/PSU but not enough to have it overheat multiple times in a day. Normally when it overheats the PSU is hot enough to almost burn me yet now it isn't even hot at all when it overheats. I don't have this problem with anything else, just this game. I would say it's the PSU but wouldn't it stop working on everything and not just one game?

Any help is appreciated. I just don't get why it's being stupid like this.

lol if you're like me then I wouldn't recommend opening it ever because somehow you'll get it fixed...for like a day. and then it's broken beyond repair
for something more safe you might just want to sell it (because it probly won't burn out on the dashboard) then buy a new new x-box

If you're too scared to do it get someone competent to open it up and do what @primalfurey did.

Think of me as the teacher from Dance Moms; I may not be here right now, but I'm off somewhere else in the world causing havoc, and in due time you'll get yours.

As for room temperature, our heat is set really low, so I doubt that's the problem.

The room temperature can also affect overheating.
Also I remember you from a long time ago.

I don't keep it on unless I'm using it. I tried to clean out the dust as much as possible without opening it. I would open it but every time I try to open up something to fix something that isn't THAT big of a problem I end up making something else worse.

just because its in an open area, it doesnt mean that it does not have dust in your xbox. thats what happened to mine.
sorry cant really give you anymore advice than that

Consider on buying a new Xbox.
Do you turn off your Xbox or just leave it on while you're heading to class?
