The 4th generation is absolute crap compared to the 5th generation. It's a solid system I admit but it's old tech dude, why get that when you can get something better. $150 for a 4th generation?

4th generation ($150) specs :
-0.7 MP camera / VGA quality front camera
-720p Recording (rear) / VGA quality (front)
-Faulty "Retna Display"
-A4 Processor (Single Core)
-16 GB Storage
-3.5 inch screen

5th generation ($300) specs :
-5MP Camera / 1.2 MP front Camera
-1080p Recording (rear) / 720p recording (front)
-TRUE Retna Display
-A5 Processor (Dual Core)
-32 GB Storage
-4 inch screen

For double the price you're expected to get 2x the better performance and the storage capacity which is very important. I recommend you go for the $300. If money is an issue I really recommend you get the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 / 4.2, very solid device and is far better than the 4th generation.
i have a 4th gen iPod and I'm about 4 seconds away from throwing it at the wall because I can't update some apps (which causes them to shut down)

your best bet: get the 5th gen
If there are apps you really want to use that are only supported by the 5th gen ipod, get a 5th gen ipod.
