The person who drew this obviously has talent, and they let their boyfriend show off the drawing, ergo they probably have some interest in improving as well. I don't know why they wouldn't. Say, someone shows off their damage in the game, right? People see their equipment and everything, if something can obviously be improved and they definitely have the ability to improve something (say, everything but their cape was great, and they had the funds to make a better cape), then whether they are aware of that or not, it's nothing but a gentle reminder. Okay, that was a terrible analogy. Maybe I should stick to baseball. And stylization has nothing to do with it, their rendering should be consistent. If they render plane changes on everything else, but the face remains to be a simple gradation, then it sticks out, even so much as they don't realize that the face would have different lighting effects.
Man, posts like that always bug me because they seem to encourage mediocrity. The drawing is good, but that doesn't mean it can't be improved.
Those styles are pretty similar to the artist's here, and lighting is taken into account, even in simpler cute styles. This is a place where the artist can improve, and who wouldn't want to improve their ability when it's something as simple as that? And this isn't "my method," it's simply drawing as a whole. Anime itself is a representation of the human figure with iconic imagery to portray features. It doesn't mean those features are gone.
On that note, I see two light sources as well. While this isn't necessarily wrong, it makes some of the shading choices feel off. When there's no environment, like here, it's probably best to pick one strong light source, because the characters are seemingly lit from the left side of the drawing, while strong light bounces off from the right side, including the reflections from the light in their eyes. The strongest highlight is on the girl's breast, however. This really aids the breast in being a focal point here, rather than the toast, especially with the strong graphics leading the eye towards it and its central positioning. In case the artist sees these comments, I wanted to point that out in case she wanted to avoid that. If not, then good use of directional imagery.
As I said before, different people take things differently. Something you think should go this way other people might not think it would be as good. To be honest, talking about such specific (or professional) things in a picture not posted by the author, or someone who drew this just for fun, or even someone who has no interest in developing their art skills in this forum might not be as helpful as talking about it in a website/place specialized for this type of drawing.
Ok seriously you guys, those are big to you? I know this is basil and all... but still.
Yeah, seriously! When I saw those comments I was starting to think I was crazy. They're most definitely on the "average" side. I think I've come to realize there's two categories of size for the Basil community, nonexistent and huge.
Well, from a non-expert point of view (as many others), I think it is good enough. There is really no standard on arts like this one. Say if the things you mention was implemented into this drawing, some people might find it less attractive / not as good as before. Main point is, the method you use for your own drawing might not work as well for others.

I did not say it in any offense, but if the artist wasn't going for that then it is an area that needs improvement. The face is not a flat surface, so it would be affected by light on its different planes. They demonstrated on the girl's breast that they know how light affects objects however, and that would lead me to believe their stylization of faces is based on other stylizations and not an abstraction of life. In the anime style the shorthand for facial features is pretty much commonplace, and those who draw referencing anime styles would perceive features differently if not knowing why they were abstracted. In anime a face can look flat and this drawing was colored as if the faces in actuality are flat. That is all I was noting, and essentially I was wondering if it was intentional or not. The faces could seem like more graphical objects while the bodies are rendered with chiaroscuro in mind. That in itself is a "style."
Well, from a non-expert point of view (as many others), I think it is good enough. There is really no standard on arts like this one. awww cute! truely good art, though no offence but they look more like a girl and her homosexually oriented friend. not that thats a bad thing- it actually makes it cutter in my opinion basil has enough maple-bf art.

The style is nice, but I don't quite like the eyes of the guy. (A little cross-eyed), but overall, It's excellent, I wish I could draw like that.
At first glance, they kinda reminded me of Matsumoto and Hitsugaya from Bleach.
