If you have a good computer and want HQ stuff, then Fraps or BandiCam are good. If you have a good computer and have nvidia, then Shadow Play is good. If you have a mediocre computer, then OBS will record with barely any performance drop, but to compensate, while recording, the quality will drop, even if you set it to record at higher qualities.

apparently my computer isn't properly equipped to be able to record with xbox's game dvr.

It may or may not. Different users of different computers report varied issues. I think if you completely uninstall maplestory before upgrading to W10, nothing should go wrong with it. I've had no issues with maple on a surface pro 3
OBS, DXStory, Or my favorite you can use Nvidia Shadow Play, But you can only use Shadow Play if you have Nvidia Drivers, Personally i think Shadow Play is the best recording software you can get
Windows 10 has a recording program built into the Xbox app called the Game DVR. It's really easy to do and the videos I've posted are made using that. I get like no performance decrease during the usage of it and the shortcuts are all handy (and work ingame).

I use shadow play by nvidia. If you have a nvidia gpu it's probably the best. It counts your frame rate, records, broadcasts, etc
