yeah a used one. from 3 years ago that cost 1000$ to build.
This is kind of true, college kids and other people sell their PCs, unlikely to find a deal though. Like people said, better off saving a bit more, or possibly using integrated graphics until you can afford a graphics card (would be fine for maple a league).

That's what I thought too but it's actually really REALLY comfortable. Although I massivveelllyyy hate the forward/backwards page buttons on the side where you lay your thumb. They're ridiculously sensitive and piss me off so much. Not 1 min ago I was trying to post a thread in the anime section but just when I was trying to move the mouse over to click Submit, it freakin pressed the back button and I had to retype it. Big fat pain in the ass but other than that, comfortable for sure!
I JUST bought a Zeus Mini yesterday for 570$ (650 with shipping and tax) from costco. It has a 1TB HDD, 8 Gigs of RAM, a 3.9 Ghz processor, and I THINK a 2 Gig Graphics. Boots up maple in about 25-30 sec lol. It's fast so far and runs pretty damn quiet. Have yet to check how well it runs other games outside of maplestory but we'll see in a little bit. I like it very much atm(btw it's really small for a tower :o like 4 inches width. you gotta use the stand they give you to hold it upright if you don't want to lay it sideways.)
Here's what I got. Zeus Mini

best bang for your buck is probably building one
He's better off saving his pennies to get a ~$650 budget. $500 will only let you build a crap PC. You're better off buying a PC at a retailer with that budget.
It all depends on the purpose. For gaming or video editing, most likely no. For web browsing and Skyping yeah there are a lot.
My laptop which was about $400 can run games fine, I just need to make sure I place it on glass to make sure it cools. I've found its the best surface for cooling a laptop. And like I said, most games. For whatever reason Maple lags, but Rome: Total War and Dota 2 don't, which is weird. Of course I play all of them on low quality, but Maple has like an optimization issue or something. Maybe its cause it has Windows 8. Also, on a cheap computer that isn't going to be very fast, make sure you are careful on the internet and only go to websites and download stuff you trust. Keep Windows Defender as the real-time protection, but keep another app for scanning when you want. DO NOT keep that other antivirus on consistently. Use it as a second opinion after a Windows Defender scan. An anti-malware like Malwarebytes is also good to have on hand, but on average a full scan takes 3 hours Remember its antiMALWARE, not antivirus, you still need a separate one.
Depends on what you mean by good. My old clunker of a computer finally kicked the bucket, so I bought a cheapy $400 computer. 1TB HDD, 3.0 Ghz processor, and 4 Gb ram. Not the most powerful pc ever, but it runs maple and other mmos fine compared to what I had before.
Now if you're expecting something like 2TB+ HDD, 4 Ghz processor, and 16 GB ram for under $500, that's not happening. You can find some good deals if you're lucky, but those usually sell out fast. If you don't mind the extra work of putting it together yourself, building a pc can definitely save you money, but I have no recommendations on where to find good deals.
