Orgo Labs lol
Wake up at 5:30AM, shower/eat then commute to school for my 8am orgo lecture. Train breaks down so get off at the next stop and RUN a half mile to show up at 8:35. nice. Back to back classes until 3:30, grab some rando lunch from a convenience store and go to my research lab till 4:30. idek how i'm alive at this point. orgo lab starts at 5:30, i'm feeling good as it's the first lab and I did my pre-lab assignment easily. boy was i wrong.
at about 6:30pm i realize my sample looks contaminated, TA recommends I restart. Lol. Fast forward to 8:00PM, on the final step of evaporating off excess solvent to induce crystallization. Everyone is finishing around me, so I get a little worried. Buddy got his crystals in 8 minutes exact, while mine had been running for almost 20 with no luck. Go to TA, she says replace the water. In doing so, I tip another buddy's conical vial OVER, ruining his lab... Help him clean up, break a beaker by dropping it... TA runs over and causes a big scene, but I wasn't hurt or anything so whatever. At this point i'm pissed, apologizing to my dude and the TA but still need to finish this lab. TA recommends I put my vial into an ice bath and stir it: nothing happens. 8:45 by now, we get out in 15mins. TA recommends that my buddy and I just grab data from someone, at the cost of 5 points off our post lab report grade. Whatever, I'll take it. I leave and commute back home, arrive at 11:00 then just crawl into bed, ignoring my statics problem set and just saying eff it.
Now it's Friday, and I wasn't on campus at all because of a religious holiday (Eid). At 3pm I realize "F*** i didn't hand in my lab report", which was due tuesday (one week from completing the lab). Frantically write some ish down (the dude I got data from had 900% yield, and I couldn't even bs data since the TA collects your data/observations sheet....) and haul my ass to school to hand it in, only to receive an email from said TA that I'd lose half my marks for handing in a late report, no exceptions. nice.
We have 6 labs total, each report is graded out of 100. At best i'm thinking i get a 50-60 on this first one, if I did my prelab/postlab questions all correct. lol. second lab this tuesday at 5pm, come thru

Orgo lab wasn't too bad for me. Never had any bad mishaps.
Somehow managed to be out pretty quick most of the time.
What was awful was analytical chemistry lab... -shudders-

n if you messed up and there's not enough time the TA is supposed to tell you to copy off results from someone who's still there idk dude
900% error y'all. That's 9x maximum amount LOL. she's bound to take additional points off because of that. @darketernity only so much time, everything that could've went wrong did. approx 7-8 other students also reported being unable to form crystals, and the lab coordinator even admitted that this happens sometimes.
Oh man, I totally feel you. I messed up a lot too during those crummy old organic chem lab days. I was so horrible at those labs I would end up walking out of the lab on the verge of having a break down. Fortunately the labs were only worth 25% of my final grade.
You probably put too much solvent in when you were dissolving your solute, if your crystals weren't forming in the ice bath. Evaporate some excess solvent, then try again.

If your crystals weren't forming after 20 mins in the ice bath and you scratched the inside of the beaker, then you probably chose the wrong solvent
My % yields were terrible in organic lab. They were way off and sometimes my samples were practically impure. The TAs don't care what results you get as long as you can explain it in the discussion.

Orgo is so easy. I find that people who say it's hard don't understand why/how the mechanisms are happening.
Good luck on the next time around! I don't remember ochem labs being cray bad, but you best study hard for those exams... I surely did not and realized only at the very end how less complicated everything would have been if I actually spent some wholesome time studying. it's really not bad as it seems!
lmao orgo lab. i was always first in last out because crap goes wrong all the time >.< >.<
for the last few labs, we had to determine what our unknown was, and we had 3. by the time we were supposed to be done with the second one, i was still working on my first one >.< >.< >.<
i even had to go to my professor's other lab class to catch up and these unknown labs were the majority of our grades, so if you didn't get one right then you're basically effed in the a... in the end i got an A- though for lab so i'm glad

I got a lab exemption from my orgo prof this semester. Took the engineering equivalent in first year before I had swapped programs.
