Smartphone Advice?

Hi Basil,

Seeing that my early decision for college came back with a letter of admission ,
my parents are finally allowing me to buy a smartphone. So far my friends have suggested the Iphone 5S, Galaxy S4 and LG G2. Its in Verizon btw, so no nexus 5 sadly. So far im leaning toward a G2 unless someone persuades me other wise. Any suggestions, tips, cautions, etc?

PS: this is my first smart phone.
Galaxy S4 has a terrible OS. Unless you root it I'd not recommend it. The best phones out at this point in time are the Nexus 5, HTC One, iPhone 5 (iPhone 5S doesn't matter), I suppose specs wise the S4 is on the list but I'd not recommend it. I really dislike the LG G2, you could definitely find a better phone.

The best Android phones on the market are without a doubt the HTC One and the Nexus 5 though. So if you want an android, I'd recommend either. Android is good because it's open source and anyone can develop for it easily.

iPhones have good specs and a better appstore than the Google Play Store but unless you jailbreak it there's not as much functionality out of one which you could do on an android. But these are primarily from things that someone interested in developing software or even changing operating systems should think about.

Overall phone functionalities are probably as follows
Android (rooted) > iPhone (jailbroken) > Android > iPhone

in terms of the app store
iPhone (Jailbroken) > Android (rooted) > iPhone > Android.

Because more people have iPhones and piracy isn't as rampant on iPhones you can get apps and games that simply aren't available on the Android market, like Phoenix Wright 123 HD. Android will probably get these eventually when there's more people who would buy it and not pirate it. Basically (no offence intended) I believe the overall market for Android users are "more intelligent" and because of that pirate everything so they get free apps. But it ends up backfiring because app developers make no money and we get less things in the long run. Whereas iPhone users commonly don't jailbreak as it voids the warranty if anything goes wrong so app developers go for the iPhone market because they have more potential to make money.

In short, if you're a technical whizz who doesn't care about apps Android is the way to go
If you care about apps, iPhone is the way to go. (But smart people who use iPhones can get a hell of a lot of them.

With some phones rooting voids your warranty and with all iPhones jailbreaking DOES void your warranty. But if you're not really gonna root or jailbreak
I'd stick with an iPhone because there are more apps and they're simpler to use. So that could help you since you're newbie smartphone user.
Coming from an owner of 3/4 phones you praised (One, iPhone 5, Nexus 5), I completely agree with every single point you've made. On a side note, I just got another HTC One (running on Sense 5 + 4.4, my other One is a GE running on 4.4.2) and I have to admit that Sense 5 isn't terrible. I definitely prefer stock KitKat, but this version of Sense is quite nice compared to any and all versions of TouchWiz. I'm surprised HTC turned the massive pile of dogs,it known as Sense 1-4 into something usable because those older versions were truly terrible, and I owned a One V at some point and I've used a DNA for a while.

People always say that android is better since you can customize it and download this and that or whatever but most people dont uses those types of things. I have the iphne 5s and its extremly easier then any android device. Just my opinion since i like android and used it for years. I just think since i have the iphone 5s its easier and cause i had a note 3 in my family so i know how the latest version of android is. If you like how ios 7 is and don't need person customization then go for android. The iphone 5s is overall easier and more smoother to use but android your allowed to do alot more like custom download and changing how most things look but its doesnt work out as planned always. So whatever you want go for.
