Why is Call of Duty so Popular

I played it a few times at my cousins house, and it was really bland. The multiplayer was a repetitive killfest with no strategy or teamwork involved. I noticed that he had Left 4 Dead, so I suggested we play that, but he said he didn't like that game. He said instead we should play Nazi zombies...
Then at school, there's a lot of people who insist Call of Duty is the best video game ever. When they start talking about CoD, I just assumed they played other games, too. I asked if they played games like Team Fortress 2 or World of Warcraft (that's a stretch, but I was wearing a WoW shirt that day) or even Minecraft, and they just laugh at me.

So, just wondering: What's so great about Call of Duty?
