Do companies sell my information?

I always get mail with my name and address on it from companies I don't even know or use like Dish Network, Cox, Bank of America.
One time I got a deal with Time warner cable, and they misspelled my name. And couple of months later I started getting mails from other companies with the correct misspelled name.. Not only does twc charge high, they also make money selling my information? Is this legal?

So that's what's in the terms of agreement. Well, no point in reading them now
