Umm the best are:

Kassadin, Nidalee, Gragas, Orianna, Fizz, Kayle, Ziggs, Annie, Kha Zix, Lux.

The 3 you list, Syndra actually really good but takes skill to play.

Idk why no one voted Lissandra, she is actually good against some mid champs like Zed, her teamfight abilitys are strong too.

I'm in your shoes too. Mid is my weakest role. I mainly jungle and top. Recently I started playing a lot of Katarina mid which I would always do well on her unlike other mid champs for now . But I wouldn't buy her off the bat. Fizz, Kassadin, Ahri, and Zed are the best so far. Brand and Lux are good picks too.

I hear you, I'm weak in Mid, Jungle, Adc (in that order, I can jungle if I get tryn but silver bans him like no tomorrow, or top steals it from me). But of those options, I find that the BEST mid lane champ in each different category are:

AP Assassin: Fiz/Kassadin (aka Kassawin aka xPeke)
AP Burst Mage: LeBlanc/Ahri/Brand
AP Caster: Annie
AD Brute: Jayce
AD Assassin: Kha'Zix
AD Caster: Ezreal/Lucian (lots of poke, good lane control with Trinity Force + other items)
Because faker: Riven (counters Zed hard no matter where he is)
Mechanical: Syndra/Orihana/Twisted Fate

I actually had a bad experience with all 3 of these champs even though they have good escapes , but if I had to choose 1 I would pick Ahri since I don't really like melee mid laners.

Syndra. She does decently well in laning phase.
Also her ultimate is inescapable. (unless zhonays is activated.)

Fizz is kinda easy to use.

You should learn Veigar he's awesome

Not too hard to learn either.

leblanc is kind of hard to learn and imo not that great of an investment if youre not looking to main mid
and yeah syndras skills are sort of similar to zyras

typically, i like leblanc bc of her snares and jukes (ult allows u to copy skills )
you can take down a lot of tanks midgame like garen or warwick ;P

Someone did tell me Syndra is similar to Zyra so maybe. I hoping one of these champs is free next week so I can try it out.
