Financial Aid

Im going to college this Fall and i applied for Financial Aid about 2 months ago and i just got an e-mail with the amount they are offering me
i've done some research and the school im going to has a yearly tuition of about $11,000 (in 2013) the financial aid im getting is about $14,000
from what i understand, the financial aid goes directly to the school so i dont know what happens to the surplus
my question is does the surplus go back to them or do i get to "keep" it
by "keep" i mean is that money for spending in the campus bookstore or can i. lets say, buy $200 worth of candy if i wanted to?

either way im glad that it'll at least pay for my tuition
the aid pays for the tuition. The remaining balance goes to you either by check or direct deposit ( depending which one you picked)

It's up to you how you spend the money. But chances are you will spend it on books and stuff.
Just a helpful hint, try to find PDF versions of your books. It will save you hundreds.

You should save the money because you don't want to waste it on garbage then get angry when you have no $$$
oh okay, thanks. i was just giving a hypothetical scenario, thats pretty cool, free money
i have a friend that already goes to college and he told me that sometimes the professors require a hard copy of the textbook but hopefully i dont run into too many of those

You keep the remaining after all the fees (tuition, not sure about boarding, not books) are paid. You can literally spend it anywhere you want.

you keep the money it goes directly into your bank account so you can buy anything anywhere
it isn't limited to the campus stores

back when i was at a community college people would save their financial money to buy a car
if i recall correctly from my federal and school sanctioned financial aid, a financial aid package not only takes into account the baseline tuition but takes into account and includes other necessities such as travel, food, rent, textbooks, personal needs, etc.

$11,000 + textbooks + cost of living (room and board) + food + travel = should exceed $14,000
yes i understand that but you know, i was just saying $200 worth of candy would be insane

There is more to pay for than just tuition. Room and board mostly, plus a few other lame fees and stuff.
