Best used car for under 6000

Hi guys! I'm getting my license pretty soon, and I would like to know the community's opinion on a decent first car. My budget is roughly $6000, and I'm looking for something that looks nice, is reliable, and is not an American brand. I'm looking for either a coupe or a sedan, preferably a bit more on the sporty side. Oh, and I would prefer for it to be a hatchback (large rear window), and for it to have a small trunk sticking out (easier to park, you'll see what I mean in the link) Right now I'm looking at the 2003/2005 Hyundai Tiburon, but I am open to other suggestions. Could you guys suggest some nice cars (state year too please!) that I should take a look at?

Thanks!

@iNfAmOuSxSniPer:

I did try to respond to your post properly, but basil's absolutely AWFUL censor filter, managed to find a word which even the magical 'CTRL+F' couldn't.

No idea if it will let me post this message but...

68 Camaro = Vintage
Old rustbucket driving through town with no exhaust, music on full and 'nice' alloys = Shed

And no;
1. You wouldn't get a shed with all that in.
2. If you could it wouldn't be a shed.
3. If it was there and mine, I'd move it to my room.
4. A/C in a shed?
5. Have fun with the generator and/or lack of electricity.
Agreed.
Sheds which have been done out, are still sheds.

If you've only just got your license, get a cheap reliable car, not some sporty thing which will cost you twice the amount on insurance.

Because the only thing that will go fast when your racing your car, is your life flashing before your eyes.
So is a 68 Camaro tuned up and fixed up still a junk car? If someone built a shed but put a movie system in there with a projector, couch, AC, etc... Would you not go in there from time to time to watch a movie? Considering its still a shed...

Sedan =/= Hatchback...

But anyway, I'd suggest a Toyota Camry for sedan, Corolla for hatchback.

Anyway, I have a 2000 tiburon, and I use it for my daily commute. It isn't exactly a powerful car, but it wasn't built to be. I was just built to be a looker. You are getting the model after my generation, and I would think it would be miles ahead in terms of improvement. My current tiburon is great and gets me there in more style than any other boring Toyota/Honda of the same model year.
i dont hate hyundai, theyre great cars with great specs but im more of a "boring" toyota/honda type of guy, its just my taste, ive always thought most hyundai cars were kind of ugly :x

Good lord not a Tiburon. They're SOOO easy to break into.

Maybe an '03-'05 Acura RSX.
S14 Silvias should be under $15k IF someone is willing to give it up.
EK Hatch. Not sure what yr you can get.

Hondas are only worth it to get used if it's a manual 90% of the time.
Don't go Euro.. too expensive for a 16 yr old to insure.
If you can get a mustang for 6k, get it. It may cost a bit more to insure but it'll last you quite a while and you'll love the power you're getting.
Don't buy anything over 100-120k. Also try to stick with things above '98ish.

I'm 19 and I don't have a car myself.
I have about 4-5Gs right now saved up and I'm planning on getting a down payment on a Hyundai Genesis coupe once I have enough, and financing it.

Mitsubishi eclipse -05- gets 200k mileage
Ford mustang -05- gets 150k mileage

DONT - get a car that has 100k mileage

eh, it depends, my dad used an 86 toyota pick up and it lasted 4xxk miles, before handing it to me for another 50k miles before it finally died on me, most cars, especially hondas will last over 250k miles if you know how to take care of it.

you can get a perfectly fine honda for less than 2500. with less than 80k miles. i've had my 94 accord ex vtec for 3 years now and still doing great. great milage too. with 6 grand i'd probably get an 06 toyota x-runner maybe and finish it off in payments..if you have a job that is.
The only small, light Japanese cars I admire (and aspire to own) is the Impreza 2.5RS, and the STi as well.

I'm going to be brutally honest: don't get a cheap Civic/Accord/Integra/Tiburon. They might be cheap to fill-up and cheap to maintain/insure, but they're pretty much crap everywhere else. They're fragile little plastic things and they've got puny engines (which is reflected in their straight-line speed).

For a 6000$ first car, I strongly recommend a BMW 3-series. Ever since I've owned my first BMW (an E30 318is) I've been hooked. They're reliable, (yes, they are. Forget the crap you hear about BMWs today, BMWs of the late 80s and all through-out the 90s are some of the most reliable cars you can own), fast (if you get a straight 6 model), fuel efficient (if you get a 4 cylinder) and unbelievable charismatic and fun to drive.

Some suggestions:

'88-'96 525i
'83-'00 318i/320i (euro)/325i/328i [E30 - E36)
The Tiburon is not a cheap car to insure, especially for a 16 year old. I looked at the car when I was looking for my first car, I was told by the insurance companies it's one of the the most expensive cars to insure.

Since it's your first car, get something RELIABLE and FUEL EFFICIENT.

Don't listen to fools that say [insert sports car], because they are VERY EXPENSIVE to insure.

How old are you TS? If you don't mind me asking because insurance rate is based on AGE

I bought an '02 Civic SiR for $3000 (had to put another $1500 into it for Safety), and it's a sweet car so far.

I got my 94 Civic Coupe for 2400 dollars. 130k miles nice paint, bone stock. Got a VTEC too Fun little car, rev limiter hits at 7400 RPM, sounds incredible even with a stock exhaust.

You dont really need anything fancy for your first car, but I definitely recommend an early 90's Civic.

^You're cool
Tiburons are definitely the nicest looking car you can get for $6k (make sure it's a second generation) however they're not that fast and their clutches have known problems. Please don't get an automatic.

Civics are overpriced however if you can get a good deal on one, you could drive it around throught out the rest of your educational career and get your money back on it.

You could check out Subaru Imprezas and Legacies, which are cool cars because they have AWD and 170HP.
Yeah, I've done a bit of research and I heard that a lot of people have problems with the clutch. And why not automatic? I'm leaning towards auto, but I guess I could always get used to manual. Another car that I was looking at was the Mitsubishi Eclipse, but after reading about the plethora of problems that it has, I switched to the Tiburon.

@easyrolling: Well I have a Spec V and I have to say if you buy one completely stock you're in a lot of trouble. First you need to change out the stock header with the pre-cat. This is because the ceramic can break apart and get sucked into the motor and another thing that sucks is there are no legal headers for this car so you either have to reinstall the pre-cat or find a smog station that can hook you up.

Another problem are the butterfly valve screws. You need to apply loctite or else when the valves open up the screws can get sucked in and you can bye-bye to Spec V. Or you can just stay under 4k rpm. I fixed these problems on my car but not everyone has the knowledge or patience, but this only applies to the 03-06 models I believe. The B16 models are good to go but aren't as sexy IMO.

If OP wants to check out Spec Vs please check out this site http://www.b15u.com/

*Just thought I'd give a fair warning I feel bad for people who buy this car without knowing its defects.
