It's kind of based on luck. When I took the writing test they put in a lot of questions about very specific things such as what color flag should be placed in the back of your car when being towed or very specific measurements for really stupid situations you'll never really encounter in practice. Ended up nearly failing the written test because I figured it was going to be mostly common sense too.
the written test is mostly common sense
read over your manual each day, and highlight important parts. theres practice tests online to help but never rely on those to get you through the test.
i took the NY permit test last year and it was soooo easy. i didn't even read the manual. just look up the test online and find practice questions. most of them are common sense questions and once you see the answer it sticks to you. this is for NY though, idk where' you're from. the written test literally took only 5-10 minutes. bad for the state though since i don't actually know anything.
your state's driver manual is best
I used the online test. Needed it to learn stuff like hydroplanning, what to do if a suicidal animal jumps infront of your car, why short rain is dangerous, speeds for city highway, look ahead time in seconds, the dangers of a winddraft from a truck. A lot of it was situational and were guessable.
go to your dmv and pick up the drivers manuel it has everything you need to know
