Yeah completely different gameplay styles. A good game comparison would be something like "Tales of Vesperia vs Star Ocean: The Last Hope" Both are jrpg's that have similar combat systems (almost identical aside from leveling skills), and I often see people recommending ToV to people that liked TLH and vice versa.
DMC vs FF though. Those are going to appeal to different crowds, especially if you're talking the older FF games that lack the faster combat that the new gen games have. DMC is more of a jump in and go kill demons and look badass while doing it. FF games are about exploring a fast fantasy world with strategizing with pause and think combat.

Although I haven't liked many of the more recent entries in the series, it's Final Fantasy for me.

Like @reprised said.. hardly comparable in terms of gameplay.
Well we can compare this too ff15 but ff15 wins for me.
but the main focus of dmc is hack and slashing so again still uncomparable
Call of Duty
Dmc has rpg elements.
historically the main final fantasy series has been a turn based rpg while dmc is a 3rd person action game. not even comparable lol
