UN declares 2nd eradicated disease

"It decimated herds and caused disaster, devastation and death associated with the fall of the Roman Empire, the French Revolution and the colonization of Africa.
But after years of global efforts, rinderpest -- German for cattle plague -- doesn't exist anymore. It is the first animal disease to be eradicated and only the second disease ever, after smallpox in 1980.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization declared Tuesday that the world was rid of rinderpest."
It's only a matter of time for some corrupt person to sell the samples to create a biological weapon.

OT: Interesting read.
No need to worry.

"If I am concerned about a smallpox attack, can I go to my doctor and request the smallpox vaccine?

No. Your doctor cannot give you the smallpox vaccine. In the United States, routine vaccination against
smallpox ended in 1972 when the disease was fully controlled. Since the vaccine is no longer
recommended, the vaccine is not available for routine use. The CDC maintains an emergency supply of
vaccine that can be released quickly, if necessary.
Are there plans to manufacture more vaccine in case of a bioterrorism attack using smallpox?

Yes. In 2000, CDC awarded a contract to a vaccine manufacturer to produce additional doses of smallpox
vaccine. The additional funds will allow the department to stockpile as much vaccine as needed to protect
the nation, or some regions, in the remote event of an outbreak of smallpox"
Besides laboratory samples, in the hands of the U.S and Russia, it has been eradicated. The last naturally occurring case of the disease was in 1977.
But there was an episode of House M.D. last season or the season before with a chick that had small pox. I think she was scuba diving and somehow got it from a bottle in a sunken ship. Anything can happen!
