why does beer taste awful?
So I just had my first beer recently at a bar and my first impression is that it tasted extremely bitter and was just a overall awful experience. I took small sips at first as I really wasn't enjoying the taste. Later I just chugged the 80% of the remaining beer after my friends told me to it's better to drink in large portions. After finishing my beer, I felt somewhat nauseous but nothing psychologically has changed about me. I only had one beer glass while my friends had 4-5 beer glasses which I noticed they started to look tipsy. The beer was a lager 5% alch. Probably not a suitable beer for a first time drinker.
Now my question is do people actually like the taste of beer or do they drink it for the side effects (drunkenness)? Right now I can't comprehend how people can drink multiple beer glasses in one sitting. It's just mind bogging.
Maybe it's because I'm a noob and this my first time. Can someone please give me a quick rundown on alcohol and why it's so enjoyable to drink?

For me, drinking has always been social more than for the taste. Simply put, if friends and I are going out or if I'm at a wedding, I'll have 1 or 2 and call it a night.
Perhaps I don't drink enough, but sometimes, I'm fine with the taste, other times, I find it unbearable. I don't think there's a science behind it, but it'd be cool to figure out so I can know how I can better enjoy it..
I personally hate the taste of beer. That doesn't stop me from playing beer pong but if I had a choice, I'd pick something else
alcohol is a poison anyway, or at least your body treats it like a poison

I love beer more than hard liquor. Sapporo is my go to drink.
When you've tried enough, you can definitely taste the difference between a good beer and a crappy one.
I don't like the taste of anything alcoholic tbh.
I just drink it quickly for the effect.

OT: I prefer liquor and I'll only drink beer if that's the only option
It's more of an acquired taste. I didn't like beer that much but then one summer I just drank a bunch of Coronas. My favorite beer right there. Tastes like water to me now.

idk i hated beer 4 like the 1st 5 times then i just got used 2 the taste

Some beers are pretty good. I find that a lot of the typical beers are overly foamy and taste like crap, but stuff like Carlsberg or Grolsch is pretty good (and cheap, hard to find a good balance).
Basically alcohol is fun in social settings, drinking by yourself probably sucks.
