Anime

Anime like Sao or anime like Another?

Thinking about watching Btoooom! since I finished SAO and Accel world, but on the other hand, i'm a bit tired of VRMMOs.

If someone knew something kind of creepy/horror anime like Another (especially survival games like Mirai Nikki) it'd be really cool to hear about. ^_^

Preferably not older animes, 'cause I don't like the animation style of 90s anime >.<

Btooom! isn't a VRMMO anime. It's an anime where the main characters are put in a situation that re-enacts the game, and not the player living inside the game. Essentially it's like playing Call of Duty and waking up to find yourself in the middle of a live war-zone. The only VR gimmick is the sonar/scanner they have. I assume it's more of a computer chip connected to the nervous system/muscle system of the body that mimics the effects of echolocation, as when someone dies you need to take the scanner off their corpse to verify you killed them (which may be easy, as blood stops being pumped and muscles relax enough to pop it out before rigor mortis sets in),

I don't think either SAO or Another are good buuuuut... When it comes to MMOs I hear that .hack// is a really good show. Haven't seen it myself though.

Also, there aren't really that many good horror anime as far as I'm concerned. But, I can recommend a visual novel. Now, disclaimer; it's an adult game, which means that it does have sex scenes and some really gruesome stuff, so play at your own risk. The game is Saya no Uta, or Song of Saya in English. I found it rather intriguing, and thought that it explored some really interesting themes in a really interesting manner. It also has quite a big romance aspect. It's pretty much one of Urobuchi's defining works.

It has an official English translation so check it out if you feel that it's for you. Again, I can't stress this enough: this game gets freaky, and that's an understatement.
@Darkness129: I agree with most of the thing you said. Asuna's character development wasn't good at all and the time skip brings incredibility. But the author has what he wants to with the time in the plot. In any show, Naruto for example, if he's getting defeated, he would have a flashback that takes 2 minutes or so while realistically it would take a second to react and make a comeback to his enemy. Time is largely unrealistic in anime and many stories in general.
I might pick up LH since I stopped at episode 9.
And even though Kirito's simplistic character is unsophisticated, I still enjoy his image as a superhero because it's just what I like. It's just like many of the American superhero movies.
That's true I suppose. I know that feeling of just wanting to watch a superhero-like character once in a while and Kirito provides that undoubtfully. You should give LH another try. All up to you. Hope you enjoy it c:
You should try reading or watching Monster. It's a real psychological thriller mystery with lots of connections in the plot.
Welp, that's two recommendations for Monster, guess i'm obligated to check that out now.

I started Log Horizon and I like it a lot so far.

I didn't really care for Danganronpa or dead man wonderland, though.
I absolutely hated Evangelion, and NOT because of the animation (which i found pretty good) Its just the story-line was so plain with nothing really surprising or anything going on
The reason why I loved Evangelion was because of the open ended *ahem* ending, and symbolism. The show threw random things at you, with you having to decipher and make meaning out of. It definitely wasn't a cut-out ending telling the viewer exactly what happened. It definitely made you think and make your own conclusion out of the show. It really just depends on what mood you're watching it in. The creator's depression is what crafted this show, so it should be watched in a similar mood. As for me, I rewatched it a few times and began to like it. The first time I saw it, I was 12 or 13, so I had no idea what was happening and hated every second of it, but now that im older and im watching it again, I can piece things together. This anime isn't for everyone, so I fully respect your opinion of it. I would say watch it again at a later time to see if you get a different conclusion.
@Darkness129: Your viewpoint is understandable. The reason I think SAO is better than LH is because it's fast pasted story that started since the beginning. LH didn't really appeal to be as much in terms of story. Well actually I don't know, if LH had the same art as SAO, I would've definitely liked it more. So art/animation definitely affects my opinion. I didn't like the idea that the heroine had a lolicon theme circling around her. But some people might like it.
If SAO followed it's story and pace like it did in the first 2 episodes, and got rid of the second half, it would have been an amazing show. It wasted so much potential in it's plot. SAO's pace was waay to fast at some points. You skip like 6 months in the first 4 episodes and 2 years by mid season, while the second half is all set within a week. It leaves practically no character development at all. I would say LH had a pretty slow start. The actual plot starts at episode 7 or 9. (I can't remember) While I would say that the female heroine was one of the few characters that didn't get much development, the whole cast more than makes up for it. Her lolicon theme was only used for comedic purposes, but it becomes irrelevant from episode 5 and onward. In terms of animation, SAO takes the cake and since it influences your opinion greatly, I think LH might not be the show for you. Since it is very character driven with a strategic approach to a conflict rather than a blunt approach with a straight forward attitude that Kirito has.

Serial Experiments Lain would be really good even though the animation isn't up to par, the story makes up for it.
I really think Log Horizon runs circles around SAO. The only thing that SAO wins in comparison is the animation and arguably, the music.

LH has really developed characters, nice pacing, an actual plot, and it actually makes you feel like you're in a game. In SAO, after a while, it seemed as if they were in a fantasy world, and didn't explore the game mechanics as deeply as I would have liked.

EDIT: OP, there aren't many horror that have come up in the past few years, the one I can think of for horror is Deadman Wonderland. It's alright. The second one is Monster, and it's more psychological/horror, but the animation might put you off since it's from 2004 - 2005.

I don't think you should base your judgement on animation styles, because going about in that mindset, you're going to be missing tons of great shows like Evangelion.

Oh, I recommend Kara no Kyoukai for horror and mystery by faaaar. It's a 7 movie series, and it has amazing animation and music, I think even better than SAO and Attack on Titan combined. You shouldn't worry about art styles, since the first movie that came out in 2007 looks even better than most stuff coming out today.
Put Kara no Kyoukai on my list, so thanks for the recommendation

OP: You should check out Full Metal Alchemist BROTHERHOOD (brotherhood is the original story-line) Code Geass, Death Note, Deadman Wonderland, Eden of the East and because you liked SAO, you should see Guilty Crown

Btooom! isn't a VRMMO. I recommend watching it, but I highly recommend reading the Btooom! manga instead. The manga expressed stronger emotions for me than the anime, but it's personal preference. Whatever you choose, it's a great story and you should definitely give it a try.

@iHipster Well 'Monster' is a thriller anime about a killer (I'm not sure how else to describe it without giving away the plot).

Then there's 'Gai Rei Zero', which is a fairly violent anime about an anti-paranormal special forces group, and it's the prequel to the manga Gai Rei (which unfortunately still does not have an anime adaptation).

Also check out 'High School of the Dead' if you're looking for horror type anime. It has some over the top echiness in it, but it doesn't get more survival horror than a zombie story.

Also for dark storylines, I quite enjoyed 'Gunslinger Girl' and 'Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom' which both happen to be about trained killers/hitmen, although completely different plots.
