I'd recommend
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Code Geass
Hunter x Hunter 2011
One Piece
Parasyte! (Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu) Probably my favorite anime this season <3
GSpot Express. It's sooo funny. It's one of my top 10 favorites
If you like FT and legend of korra you'll love Soul Eater. Soul eater has that english-anime vibe and has a lot of good fight scenes and has comedy. Also the best anime of all time One Piece (my opinion).
FMA Brotherhood fits you perfectly. Soul Eater and the Fate series are very good as well.
One piece , Bleach and Naurto - loads of action and fun , a lot like fairy tail
Magi
Soul eater - very good
Code guess / Guilty Crown - very good
Full Metal alchemist - very good
Cowboy bebop - very good
Happy viewing
Baccano is good too.

nice boat tho.
If you liked Fairy tail you'll probably like One Piece. It starts off sorta 'meh' though, but then it really starts getting interesting. Also try Naruto, I'd rate Naruto 9/10, and Naruto shippuden like 6.5-7/10
Log Horizon is really good so far. It's like Sword Art Online but better in pretty much every way.

Fate/Stay night unlimited blade works (TV) Honestly hands down one of the best action anime's I have watched so far. The artwork is nice but the ANIMATION AND MUSIC are on a whole new level. Many people call the anime unlimited budget works b.c honestly it's some next level action.
I recommend you watch schooldays one of the most funniest anime I have ever watched. The ending will leave you to tears.
magi
hunter x hunter
soul eater
others:
no game no life
attack on titan
Magi. Seems like something you'll definitely be able to get into
Code Geass: Probably one of the best Mechas of all time.
Personally, I prefer Gurren Lagann and Full Metal Panic (to name two off-hand) I like more than Geass... though I still need to see R2 (since my copy came with screwed disks).
I recommend you watch schooldays one of the most funniest anime I have ever watched. The ending will leave you to tears.
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. It is elemental, has magic, and definitely has comedy.
DanMachi the new SAO
Trinity Seven since it's new and over
i only specialize in action, so without further ado:
code geass
attack on titan
eureka 7 (deceptively good)
gundam wing/00/G
and that's just for starters
Nisekoi: Romantic comedy, cliched but pulled off brilliantly
Amagi Brilliant Park: Comedy, super colourful and features a great cast of characters
Fate/ stay night Unlimited Blade Works: amazing animations and fight scenes
FMA: Brotherhood: fantastic storyline and action, great characters as well
Code Geass: Probably one of the best Mechas of all time
have fun!
gekkan shoujo nozaki-kun Slice of life, school and romance, best anime I've seen. I liked it a lot because of the price like tom boy character
Darker then black
or FMA
The best places to start are with the classics... Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Outlaw Star (funny enough, these shows all aired at the same time in the US) and so on. If you want a good magic-based series with comedy, I'd definitely recommend Slayers... and to a lesser extent Those Who Hunt Elves.
Code Geass is a good starter anime.
My personal favorite is Attack on Titan. It inst very long but it sure is epic. Take some time to watch it! It is only 25 episodes.
Hunter x Hunter or One Piece if you're ready for a long anime
*Most of these aren't what you're looking for based off your genre you listed but are well worth the watch and nice beginner animes here. This gives quite variety of tastes
Also googling "Anime recommendations" is a great way to start up a list"
I would also highly recommend watching seasonal shows(which you can find a list of recommend winter season shows on basil somewhere) starting in about 1-2 weeks so that you and your friend can discuss the episodes while they come out. Its a great topic since you both will be interested in the same show at the same time.
Psycho Pass
Yu- Yu Hakusho
Amagi Brilliant Park
Fate/Zero
Fate/Stay night unlimited blade works (TV)
Steins;Gate
Nanatsu no Taisai
Parasyte
Code Geass
shingeki no kyojin
Gurren Lagann
No game no life
Sword Art Online S1 and S2
Longer shows-
One Piece
Hunter x Hunter 2011
If you like romance/slice of life stuff
Clannad and Clannad After Story
AnoHana
5 cm a second
FMA: Brotherhood
Fate series (Fate/Stay Night, Fate/Zero, Fate/Stay Night UBW)
Toaru Majutsu no Index
Magi
