Why cant Gms more liberal?
In all seriousness why can't I be openly gay in maplestory? I can only explain my sexuality with asterisks. What if i wanted to marry my bf ingame. I know i could just make a female character, but I'm just wondering why gms hasn't done it.

I've heard that Mabinogi allows for gay marriage. They'd probably implement it if people wanted it.
I'm no expert on sociology and the history of the lgbt community's perception in the US or Korea, but I believe that at the time of the marriage system's implementation, lgbt acceptance wasn't mainstream. Implementing a marriage system into a game which attracts children and adults aged 20+ to play together and marry each other(even if only pretend) is extremely creepy in and of itself, regardless of the sexuality of it, and I'd say it was a risky move. Compounding that problem with a hot-button social issue such as gay-marriage you can see that from a business pov, they were afraid that accommodating what was perceived at the time by the majority to be a deviant act would negatively affect revenue.
Nowadays, being perceived as a pro-lgbt company became a trend among a lot of companies because the anti-lgbt sentiment is no longer significant enough to make expanding its product's target audience to the lgbt community a risky move. In fact it's quite the contrary. When it comes to this game though, it'll take a lot of push on your end to make Nexon think that it's within their financial interest to implement same-sex marriage into the game. It seems like they're having a hard time allocating funds to their workers to address fundamental, immediate problems let alone a superfluous game mechanic.
btw I don't think there is anything in the ToS preventing you from being openly gay.
@McBanHammer: Then get a friend ring.
@BlueLight: They just watching out for themselves, also to the TS who cares if you can't have hearts and crap, shouldn't your feelings for your significant other be more than enough to show that you guys care for each other?
I think of it more like if i wear a ring or a bracelet irl to represent a relationship with another person. It can carry the same sentimental value in a video game
You should always have the right to display a connection with another human.

I guess you can say that they don't want to start any issues with supporting a "small" audience of gay people vs a "large" audience of those who will be offended by the idea of gay marriage. It's gonna cause too many issues and even anti-gay marriage parents would go as far as making the company a much more worse name than it has now. I mean, if they can come up with bs like "They will force our children in school to learn about gay marriage and force them to accept gay marriage and ignore our beliefs", I'm sure people can come up more absurd reasons why they have the right to sue Nexon for this.... I dunno politics should stay away from games like this :X
gms fears the wrath of god
I main an Angelic Buster so I don't have that problem.
It's their game. They can do what they want on it.
I personally don't condone gay marriage, but I just stopped caring about it, since it's quite unimportant to me.
Back to the first point though, it's their game. Riot Games doesn't hate black people, even though the first black champion was released just over a year ago in the games 5 year existence (though his only skins make him a thug or a sports player...)
So yeah. I don't get it either way. They made this game back when marriage made sense, they may not wanna bother changing it.
you missed your line
@McBanHammer: You ain't fooling no-body whiteboy.
Wish you could unite pixles with whomever you want to.
You don't want them to be gay because they see it online? It's like the desire to not be black after watching The Fresh Prince on tv.
THERE IS NO LOGIC IN THIS!
Stupid Koreans -_-
Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
Because this game was and still is aimed towards younger people, most parents do not want their children to be gay or have anything to do with it, it's only a precaution, it doesn't mean they want it to be this way.
In seriousness though, it's not a game meant to be involved in politics. It wasn't like that when the game came out and there's almost no support for it so nothing will change.

Why can't grammar
Because the game isn't about being openly gay, it's about wasting your life away grinding.
Because this game was and still is aimed towards younger people, most parents do not want their children to be gay or have anything to do with it, it's only a precaution, it doesn't mean they want it to be this way.
